Sea Gulls Use Four Run Third to Down Spartans

SALISBURY, MD – The top-seeded Salisbury University Sea Gulls used a four-run third inning to down the sixth seeded York College Spartans 4-0 in the opening round of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday. The Spartans are now 9-19 overall while the Sea Gulls improve to 20-9.

The Spartans will face the loser of the #2 Frostburg State - #5 Wesley College first round game that won't be played until Thursday in Fredericksburg, VA. That second round game will be held on Friday afternoon at either Frostburg or Wesley.

The Green and White had something cooking in the top of the third as Rob Klinck singled and moved to third on a Jimmy King double with no outs. Sea Gull starter Chris Greiner got a ground out, a foul out, and a fly out to center to keep the Spartans' off the board.

The Sea Gulls got all the runs they needed in the fateful third frame. It started with a lead off single by Nick Gentry. Gentry stole second and moved to third on a ground out to first. Gentry scored on an RBI ground out by Joey Jones as the Sea Gulls had one run in but no runners on with two outs.

That's when a Spartan error opened the floodgates, allowing the Sea Gulls to tack on three unearned runs in the inning.

The Spartans had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth but would be unable to push across a run.

York left two runners on in the eighth but again, Greiner was able to get out of the inning without any damage.

Greiner earned the win as he went eight shutout innings, allowing just six hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. He improved to 6-2 with the win. Drew Baldwin tossed the ninth with a strikeout.

Sophomore Joey Couch took the loss despite throwing well. The right-hander allowed four runs, just one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk in his eight innings of work. He falls to 3-6 with the hard-luck loss.

Gentry led the Gulls with two hits and a run scored while Dustin Herbert was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Brian Green added a hit, a run and an RBI.

Klinck paced the Spartans with two hits while King had the game's lone extra base hit with his third inning double.

The Spartans must now wait to find out where they will play on Friday. The loser of the second round game will be eliminated from the tournament while the winner will advance to the weekend portion of the tournament at Salisbury.
