FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College baseball squad exploded for a season-high 16 runs as they defeated the University of Mary Washington 16-4 in the opener of a three-game set in Fredericksburg, VA. The Spartans, winners of three straight conference games, improve to 7-14 overall and 6-8 in the CAC. The Eagles fall to 16-10 overall and 6-7 in the conference.
The Spartans tallied a season-high eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to blow open a close contest.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second but York responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third as senior Devin Harbold had an RBI single while Klinck notched a sacrifice fly as the Spartans took a 3-1 lead.
Mary Washington trimmed their deficit to 3-2 with a single run in the bottom of the fifth but again, York answered in the top of the ensuing frame. This time, the Spartans fashioned a five-run inning in the top of the sixth. The Green and White banged out five hits in the inning while a pair of Eagle errors aided the Spartans' uprising as York sent 10 hitters to the plate. Senior CT Stanley opened the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to left center. Senior Joe Doyle followed with an RBI single to left. Tretter scored Doyle with a sacrifice fly before Justin Cohen notched an RBI single to left. Harbold closed out the scoring in the inning with an run scoring single to left.
The hosts trimmed the Spartan lead to 8-4 with a pair of runs in the seventh. That set the stage for York's biggest inning of the year. The Spartans got their eight runs on seven hits, one error and a pair of hit batters.
Sophomore Joey Couch was the beneficiary of the Spartan offensive outburst as he went 6.2 innings to earn his third win of the season. He allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Couch is now 3-4 for the campaign as he has won last two starts. Freshman Bryan Palumbo tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs with two hits and a walk.
Matt Abramson took the loss for the Eagles as he allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3.0 innings of work. He falls to 0-1 with the loss. The Mary Washington bullpen combined to allow 13 runs on 14 hits over the final five innings of the game.
Three Spartans had three hits in the game to pace the 19-hit attack. Klinck was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored while Harbold was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Cohen finished the game 3-for-6 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Tretter and Kyle Cook each had two hits and an RBI while Cook scored a trio of runs. Stanley and Doyle each contributed two hits, two runs and an RBI to the Spartan cause.
Eric Rehbein led the Eagles as he was 3-for-5 with two RBI while Jackson Clement and Mitchell Herringshaw each notched a pair of knocks in the loss.
The Spartans and Eagles resume the series with a double header on Sunday afternoon at York's Jaquet Field. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
