YORK, PA – The York College baseball team saw their 10-game win streak come to a grinding halt as the Ferrum College Panthers ripped the Spartans 17-7 in a non-conference contest at Jaquet Field on Thursday. The Spartans fall to 28-13 overall while the Panthers improve to 24-13 for the season.
The Spartans are locked in a battle for an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament and Thursday's performance didn't help that pursuit.
After two scoreless innings, the Panthers played small ball and the Spartans played like they were sleeping as Ferrum tallied three runs in the top of the third. The inning began with a bounding single up the middle by Sammy Holloway. Jason Parker then laid down a sacrifice bunt the Spartans couldn't handle resulting in both runners being safe. The Panthers bunted again and this time Jason Butterworth bunted towards second base for a single resulting in the bases becoming loaded. Spartan starter Joey Couch (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) then coaxed a potential double play ground ball to short by Paul Jaglowski but the relay throw went in the Spartan dugout, allowing two runs to score. Justin Franklin then singled to right to score the Panthers' final run of the inning.
Holloway made it 4-0 Panthers in the fourth with an RBI double as the Spartan offense couldn't get anything going.
The Panthers blew the game open in the fifth with a four spot coming on four sharp hits off reliever Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock). Jaglowski and Franklin each drove in one while Travis Crump lofted a two-run double down the left field line to push the lead to 8-0.
Daniel Alverez blasted a long home run to center in the seventh, pushing the lead to 9-0. The Panthers tacked on another three runs in the inning as the lead ballooned to 12-0 after six and a half innings of play.
Steve Tretter (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) combined to spoil the shutout for the Panthers. Tretter singled to lead off the seventh and Klinck followed with a two-run jack to deep left, getting the Spartans on the board.
The Spartans made it interesting in the bottom of the eighth as Klinck blasted a grand slam to deep right. He was followed by a Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) solo blast to left as the Spartans cut the Ferrum lead to 12-7.
The Panthers got all five of those runs right back in the ninth as the lead grew to the final 17-7 margin.
Brian Mays earned the win for the Panthers as he improves to 7-3. He allowed two runs on six hits in his seven innings of work. He struck out five and walked four in his outing. Trey Finch relieved Mays and was greeted for five runs on four hits including two home runs in his one-third inning of work. Josh Taylor threw the final 1.2 innings for Ferrum as he allowed one hit during his stint.
Couch suffered the first loss of his collegiate career as the recently named CAC Rookie-of-the-Year allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in four innings of action. He falls to 5-1 for the campaign. Rosenzweig allowed four runs on four hits with a walk in his one inning outing. Brian Workman (Cherry Hill, N.J./Paul VI) and Tom Moran (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both threw scoreless innings out of the pen for the Spartans.
Holloway led the Panthers as he was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jaglowski drove in four runs as he was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Peter Byron added three hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Butterworth was 3-for-6 with two runs scored from his lead off spot. Alverez had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
Tretter led the Spartans with a career-high four hits while he scored two runs. Klinck drove in six on his two home runs, his fourth and fifth home runs of the year. Senior Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) added two hits and a run scored.
The two teams conclude the regular season on Friday afternoon in a 1:00 pm tilt at Jaquet Field.
