Spartans Outlast Piedmont Lions in Trip Opener
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The York College baseball squad opened a four-game road trip to Methodist University on Friday afternoon as they outlasted Piedmont College 10-8.
The Spartans raise their win streak to seven as York improves to 25-12 overall. Piedmont falls to 20-19 for the campaign.
The Lions reached Spartan starter Joey Couch (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) for a single run in the top of the first to take the early lead. York responded with three runs on a pair of hits including a two-run double from Rick Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) and a C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) sacrifice fly.
The Lions tied the game back up almost immediately in the top of the second as the Lions got a two-out, two-run double from shortstop Scott Haddock.
The Spartans broke the tie for good in the bottom of the third as Shumway again doubled and this time he scored on a Stanley RBI single up the middle. The Spartans pushed the lead to 6-3 with a two spot in the fourth as Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) stroked a two-run double in the frame.
The Lions cut the Spartan lead to 6-5 with two runs in the sixth but York fashioned a four-run seventh inning to take the 10-5 lead. Senior catcher Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) ripped a two-run single while two more runs scored on a Lion error.
Piedmont got a pair of runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to provide for the final 10-8 Spartan margin of victory.
Couch earned the win as he improves to 5-0 for the year. He allowed five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in his six inning stint. Sophomore Brandon Ullom (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) picked up his third save of the year as he allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with four strikeouts in three innings.
Spencer Shelton absorbed the loss as he allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 10 hits with five walks and a strikeout in 6.2 innings of work. He falls to 3-7 with the loss.
Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford), Shumway, Stanley, and Meehan led the Spartans with two hits each. Cook and Shumway each added two RBI and a pair of runs scored while Meehan and Stanley each had two RBI and a run scored. Connolly was 1-for-4 with two RBI on his 12th double of the year.
Kevin McConnell went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Corey Lindsey, Daniel Rivera, and Haddock each had a pair of hits. Haddock added two RBI and a run scored while Rivera dented the plate twice for Piedmont.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they play Piedmont at 1:00 pm followed by a 7:00 pm contest against host Methodist University.
