YORK, PA - The York College baseball team picked up their 24th victory of the season with a 10-4 triumph over visiting Montclair State on a chilly Wednesday afternoon in York. The Spartans now stand at a solid 24-12 for the 2010 campaign while the Red Hawks drop to 17-14.
Junior right-hander Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) picked up the win on the hill to go to 5-4 on the season. He tossed three complete innings while allowing two runs, only one earned, on two hits while striking out three.
The Spartans got on the board early as they scratched across a run in the bottom of the first. Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) led off with a single into left center field. Third baseman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) then laid down a beautiful bunt, intended to be a sacrifice, but he beat out the throw from his Red Hawk counterpart Kevin Miller. After Montclair recorded the first out of the inning, the Spartans executed a flawless double steal to put runners on second and third and only one out. Clean-up man Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) delivered for the Green and White with a RBI single into center to plate Worthman for the game’s opening salvo.
The visitors took their lone lead of the game in the top of the third when they plated two. A pair of smart-hitting sacrifice flies scored both of the Red Hawk runs as they took a 2-1 lead after two and a half.
Undaunted, the Spartans responded in the bottom half of the frame, exploding for five runs all coming with two outs. With the bases loaded and two down, Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) enticed a walk from reliever John Masklee, who would end up suffering the loss, to push across Cook who had opened the frame with a single. Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton), who had a tremendous day for the Green and White, then drove in York’s second run of the inning with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. Senior catcher Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) then crushed a double off the left field wall to clear the bases and give York a 6-2 lead.
The Spartans never looked back from there.
York’s pitching, which consisted of six hurlers over the final six innings, shut down the Montclair side only allowing four hits and two runs throughout the remainder of the game.
The home squad tallied one more in the fourth before adding three more insurance runs in the sixth. CT Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) reached base by way of hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Stanley to second. After a Klinck single and a wild pitch, the Spartans had runners on second and third with only one out. Monti then capped off his day with a ringing triple to left center, plating both Stanley and Klinck. Meehan followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Monti from third for York’s tenth and final run of the ballgame.
For the contest, Monti went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Meehan registered a 2-for-3 performance at the plate while driving in four, while Klinck went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. In total, York’s seven through nine hitters went a combined 7-for-11 with eight RBIs and four runs scored.
The Red Hawks’ Sam Politan drove in two runs with a ninth-inning round-tripper. Mickey McGraw went 1-for-3 with a RBI and Jay Bionde posted a 1-for-4 day.
York, winners of six straight following their untimely exit from the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, returns to action on Friday, April 30. The Spartans travel south for a four-games in three-days stretch that should prove vital to their postseason hopes. Beginning on Friday, the Spartans take on Piedmont in Fayetteville, N.C. in a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
