YORK, Pa. - The York College baseball team (11-9, 7-5 CAC) lit up Jaquet Field on Wednesday afternoon by scoring 20 runs on route to a 20-4 victory against the Gallaudet University Bison (0-18, 0-14) in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.
The Green and White received hits from 13 different players in the contest, with junior shortstop Rob Klink (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) leading the offensive showcase with a 5-for-6 day to go along with three runs scored and two RBI. Klink was a round-tripper short of the cycle on the day.
After finding themselves down 2-0 through the first half inning of play, the Spartans found the sweet spot with a two-out, bases empty home run to left-center off the bat of senior Rick Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area), his second of the season.
York would hold the Bison scoreless from that point on through seven innings. While controlling the pace on the defensive side as the offense put on a show.
In the second inning, CT Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) sent the opening pitch to left field for a two-bagger and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Klinck then doubled to center field, scoring Stanley and advancing a runner to third. Senior Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) found his target with two men on by sending a triple to center field, driving in two runs. The Spartans would go on to score two more runs before ending the inning.
The Green and White would return in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding lead against the Bison by scoring ten runs in the frame. Nine Spartan players recorded RBI, starting with third baseman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford). Cook stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and slammed a double to left-center scoring two runs on the play.
Shaun Rutherford (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) came up to bat in the sixth with two outs and the bases empty and jacked a ball deep over the left field wall. It was the sophomore’s second tater of the year.
York’s Jeff Benchich (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) recorded his first win of the season. Brian Lusby (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and Josh Kohn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) took the mound in relief during the sixth and ninth innings, respectively.
The Spartans have now been the victors in five straight games and six of the past seven games overall. Next up for York will be a game at Messiah College on Thursday April 1. First pitch slated to be thrown at 3:30 pm in Grantham, Pa.
