ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The York College baseball squad rolled to a 19-2 Capital Athletic Conference win over St. Mary’s College in a Wednesday afternoon contest in St. Mary’s City, MD. The Spartans improve to 7-9 overall with the win while their conference mark rises to 4-5. St. Mary’s is now 7-12 as their four-game win streak was snapped by the loss. The Seahawks are 4-6 in the CAC.
The Spartans got a pair of runs in the top of the first to take the early lead. The Green and White then exploded for a seven-run second inning. Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) got the scoring started when he was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded. Rick Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) scored the next two with a two run double. Mike Connolly (Newfield, N.Y./Selden) followed with a two-run double of his own as the Spartan lead was 7-0 after the run-scoring knock. Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) ripped a two run double of his own to cap the scoring in the frame.
The Spartans continued the scoring onslaught with a three run third. Joe Doyle’s (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) two-run triple highlighted the inning.
The 12-0 lead would prove to be more than enough for freshman hurler Joey Couch (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) as the right-hander won his second straight start with six innings of strong work.
The Seahawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth but York got a single run in the sixth, four in the seventh and two more in the ninth for their 19 runs. St. Mary’s got their second run off the Spartan bullpen in the bottom of the seventh.
Couch improved to 2-0 with his six innings of one-run work. He allowed seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in winning his second collegiate start. Three Spartan relievers followed Couch and combined to allow a run on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Jon Gill took the loss for St. Mary’s as he allowed eight runs, seven earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work. He falls to 0-3 with the loss. The four Seahawk relievers combined to provide little relief for St. Mary’s as they allowed nine runs, all earned, on 12 hits in the final 7.2 innings of the game.
Klinck led the Spartans as he was 4-for-6 with five RBI and a run scored. Connolly was 3-for-5 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored while Shumway was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cook chipped in with two hits, four runs scored and an RBI as five Spartans had multiple hits in the 17-hit Spartan attack.
Andrew Osborne was the lone Seahawk to have multiple hits as he was 2-for-2. Sheppard and Ian Simpson-Shelton each had an RBI for St. Mary’s.
The Spartans return to Jaquet Field on Friday when they host Rowan University in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm. The Spartans then host St. Mary’s in a CAC double dip on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
