Eagles Sweep Spartans in York's CAC Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College Spartan baseball squad dropped their Capital Athletic Conference openers falling to Mary Washington in a league twin bill on Saturday in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles won the opener 5-2 and then completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Spartans are now 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the CAC while the Eagles are 6-0 and 4-0 in the conference.

In game one, the Eagles had a big bottom of the third inning as they struck for three runs to seize the lead. Will Wright and Seth Jordan each had an RBI single in the frame while Alex Howell plated a run with an RBI double.

The Spartans were being no-hit heading into the fourth when Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. The Spartans eventually loaded the bases in the frame only to have Eagle pitcher Eric Rehbein get out of the jam.

Mary Washington increased the lead to 4-0 in the fifth courtesy of a Santino Rosanova RBI single to center. York broke up the shutout in the sixth courtesy of a Connolly RBI single to left, plating Rick Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) who had singled with one out in the inning. The Eagles answered the Spartan run with a run of their own as Seamus Bergen recorded an RBI single to right.

Rehbein tossed the complete game as he improves to 1-0. He allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Spartan ace Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) absorbed the loss as he falls to 1-1. He allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Bergen, Wright, and Jordan paced the Eagle offense as they each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Connolly led York’s game one offensive effort with two hits and an RBI. Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) added a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base.

In game two, the Eagles reached Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) for two runs in the first inning and two more in the second as York found themselves in a 4-0 hole after two frames.

York got one run back on a Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) RBI single to left in the top of the third.

Rosenzweig settled down in his final two innings of work but the damage had already been done. The Spartans got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as they closed their gap to one. The Green and White got a runner to second with two outs in the seventh but could not push home the tying run as they dropped their third straight.

Matt Abramson earned the win as he allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings. He improves to 2-0 win. Nick Corbin picked up the save as he threw three innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Rosenzweig suffered the loss to fall to 0-2. He allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with a strikeout. Freshman Joey Couch (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was stellar in his two inning relief stint as he was perfect with a strikeout in his outing.

Rehbein led the Eagles as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Jackson Clement added two hits and a run scored while Wright and Jordan each had a hit and an RBI.

Six Spartans had a hit in the game with Doyle and freshman Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) picking up doubles for York. Cook and Steve Tretter (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) each had an RBI for the Spartans.

The Spartan defense committed five errors in the two games as they are now 0-5 when they commit at least one error in a game.

The Spartans are slated to make their 2010 home debut on Wednesday, March 10 when they host Wesley College in a CAC contest. First pitch from Jaquet Field is set for 2:30 pm.
