Spartans edge Rhodes to Finish Atlanta Trip 2-2
ATLANTA, GA – The York College Spartan baseball team closed out their spring trip to Atlanta with an 8-7 victory over Rhodes College on Sunday morning at Chappell Park in Atlanta, GA. The Spartans improve to 2-2 overall while the Lynx fall to 7-2. The loss snaps Rhodes’ seven game win streak.
Rhodes got on the board first courtesy of a Matt Gilbert sacrifice fly to center, scoring Brent Lindsey who had led off the top of the fourth with a single off Spartan starter Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon).
The Spartans tied the game two batters into the bottom of the fourth. Senior Rick Shumway (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) notched a pinch-hit single to right field, starting the Spartan inning. Shumway stole second and moved to third when Rhodes catcher Chris Conkell threw the ball away. Shumway scored on a Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) single up the middle. Doyle moved to second on a ground ball to third and scored when Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) singled to short and shortstop Brooks Royer committed an throwing error on the play, giving York a 2-1 lead. York’s third run came after Baker loaded the bases and then hit Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Herford) with a pitch to plate Meehan with the third run of the inning. Baker got a strikeout and pop out to end the York threat.
Rhodes cut the Spartan lead to 3-2 in the sixth on a Brogan Jayne RBI single.
York answered with a C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) two-run bomb to left, giving York a 5-2 lead through six innings of play.
The Lynx responded with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the seventh, again drawing to within one run of the Spartans at 5-4.
The Spartans got three more runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a big Rhodes error as Cook reached on a two-out error in the from. He stole second and then scored on a Stanley RBI single through the left side. Stanley advanced to second on the throw to the plate and came around to score on a Connolly single up the middle. After Connolly moved to second on a passed ball and Shumway walked, Doyle plated Connolly with a single through the left side, giving York a seemingly comfortable 8-4 lead.
The Lynx made life very interesting in the top of the ninth. Reliever Jeff Benchich (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) walked Lynden Pindling to open the inning before being relieved by Tom Moran (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). Moran walked the first batter he faced to put runners at first and second. Nick Belisle then singled to center to plate Pindling cutting the York lead to 8-5. A fielder’s choice gave York the first out of the inning as runner were at the corners. Lindsey then launched a sacrifice fly to center, trimming the Spartan advantage to 8-6 with two outs. A Conkell double to left Lynx runners at second and third. Moran uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Travis Perkins with Rhodes’ seventh run of the game. Moran struck out Austin Marcum on a called third strike, ending the game and allowing York to split their four games in Atlanta.
Frankenfield picked up the win as he tossed six strong innings, allowing two runs on eight singles while he struck out six and walked three. He needed 105 pitches to navigate through his start as he is now 1-0. Benchich allowed three runs on three hits in his two-inning stint. He struck out one and walked another in his appearance. Moran allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and a strike out for York.
Brian Lainoff took the loss for the Lynx as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with five walks and a strikeout in 3.1 innings of action. Jackson Baker relieved Lainoff and allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits and three strikeouts in his 4.1 inning stint.
Stanley powered the Spartan offense as the junior was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Shumway came off the bench to record two hits and a run scored while Doyle was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Devin Harbold (York, Pa./West York) chipped in two hits to the 12-hit Spartan attack.
Perkins went 4-for-5 in the loss as he also had an RBI and a run scored. Belisle and Conkell each went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Belisle also had a run scored. Conkell had the Lynx only extra base hit with his ninth inning double.
The Spartans now head to Ashland, VA to face
Randolph-Macon in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.
