Big Third Inning Lifts York to Victory
LAGRANGE, GA - The York College baseball squad used an eight run third inning to roll to a 9-1 victory in their 2010 season opener at LaGrange College in LaGrange, GA on Friday afternoon. The Spartans earned the first win in a season opener since York recorded a win over Juniata in 2006.
York is now 1-0 while the Panthers fall to 5-4 for the campaign.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the first as Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) led off the game with a double to left center. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) sacrifice fly to center.
York got a key defensive play in the bottom of the second as Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) gunned down Jordan Martinec at home plate ending the inning and keeping the Panthers off the board.
The Green and White then had some good fortune as they used six hits and took advantage of three LaGrange errors to put eight runs on the board. C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) had a two-run single in the inning while Connolly stroked an RBI double to right center. Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional), Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion), Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) and Worthman each added an RBI in the frame.
That would be more than enough for Spartan ace Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) as he cruised through seven innings of work. He worked out of trouble in the second and seventh innings but didn’t really have any other problems in the game. He struck out nine, walked three and allowed just three hits in his season-opening stint. The victory is his 17th career win for the Green and White.
Robby Williams suffered the loss as he allowed all nine runs on seven his with one strikeout in his two-plus innings of work. He falls to 1-1 with the loss. The Panther bullpen was solid after Williams’ departure as they combined to shutout the Spartans over the final seven innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Worthman, Connolly, and Meehan led the 10-hit Spartan attack with two knocks each. Worthman scored two runs and drove in another while Connolly and Meehan each had an RBI and a run scored. Stanley was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored for York.
Miles Lee and Kevin Bowman each had a pair of hits for the Panthers. Luis Perez had LaGrange’s lone RBI with his bases loaded hit by pitch.
The Spartans continue their five game southern
swing as they face Emory in an 11:00 am twin bill at Chappell Park
in Atlanta, GA.
