Spartan Baseball Earns NCAA Tournament Bid (Updated)
The York College baseball team earned a bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III National Tournament as announced by the NCAA on Monday morning. The Spartans are the sixth seeded team in the eight-team Salisbury University Regional at Salisbury, MD. The tournament will be contested at Arthur Perdue Stadium, home of the Delmarva Shore Birds, in Salisbury, MD.
Salisbury is the top seed as the Capital Athletic Conference champions enter the tournament 37-6. Shenandoah (28-6) is the second seed followed by North Carolina Wesleyan at 27-19. The Spartans (27-14) will face the Battling Bishops in their first game on Wednesday at 4:30 pm in the tournament's third game. Christopher Newport (24-11-2) is the fourth seed and will battle Washington & Jefferson (33-12), the five seed, in the first game of the day at 10:00 am. Johns Hopkins (24-14), the Centennial Conference champion, will face Shenandoah as the seventh seed and will be the final game of Wednesday with first pitch coming at 7:45 pm. Washington and Lee (22-13) rounds out the eight-team regional and faces top seeded Salisbury at 1:15 pm.
Six teams will compete at five first-round sites; eight teams will compete at three first-round sites. All first rounds will use a double-elimination format. Thirty-five conference champions qualified automatically for the 54 team field.
Winners of the eight first-round tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin, May 22-26.
Tickets are $3.00 for general admission and $2.00 for students, children under 12 and senior citizens 65 and over. There are all session passes available for $15.00, available at the stadium gates.
