Klinck Hits for the Cycle as Spartans Pick Up Win #1
ATLANTA, GA-York College sophomore Rob
Klinck (Stanhope, N.J. /Lenape Valley Regional) hit for
the cycle as the York College Spartans picked up their first win of
the year, a 12-7 victory over Oglethorpe University on Saturday in
Atlanta, GA. The Spartans improve to 1-2 overall while the Stormy
Petrels fall to 4-4 for the year.
Oglethorpe jumped on the Spartans early courtesy of a two-run
homer off the bat of J.J. Rizzo in the bottom of the first inning.
The Petrels added two more runs in the bottom of the second
courtesy of a walk, a stolen base, a passed ball, an RBI single and
then a Spartan error as it looked like the Green and White would be
in for a long afternoon.
The Spartans got back into the game in the top of the third with
a three-run inning. Kyle Cook (Pylesville,
Md./Harford) had an RBI ground out followed by a
Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y. /Newfield) RBI single.
Senior Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) plated
the third run of the frame with an RBI single to first. The
Spartans left the bases loaded, as they could not do any further
Oglethorpe got their fifth run in the third on a Spartan error
but the Petrels would leave two runners stranded in the frame.
York got a pair in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Klinck
began the uprising with a two-out solo homer to right center. Cook
was then hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a Connolly single and
scored on a Matt Austin (Shrewsbury,
Pa./Susquehannock) single to left.
The Petrels responded with two runs of their own in the fourth
as Andy Farrey stroked a two-run double to left center, giving the
hosts a 7-5 lead.
The game settled down with a quiet fifth inning but the Spartans
tied the game in the top of the sixth. Klinck began the frame with
a double to left center and scored on an Oglethrope fielding error.
Poff then plated Cook, who had reached on the error, with a double
to right as the game was knotted at seven. The Spartans again left
the bases loaded in the frame, as they were unable to push across
the lead run.
Klinck was again the middle of the scoring for York in the
decisive seventh inning. He stroked a one-out triple to kick-start
the game-winning rally for the Spartans. He scored the tie breaking
run when Cook singled him home. Cook moved to third when Connolly
doubled to left field. Austin then drove them both home with a
single up the middle. Austin then rode home when sophomore
C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College)
jacked a two-run homer to left, giving York the 12-7 lead.
Junior reliever Jeff Benchich (Salt Point, N.Y.
/Millbrook) came out the pen and was fantastic over the
final three innings as he held the Stormy Petrels to three hits as
he picked up his first Spartan save.
Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon)
picked up the win out of the pen. He tossed three innings, allowing
two runs on a hit with three walks and five strikeouts. The win is
the first of the year for the junior right-hander. Jake
Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) started and went two
plus innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on three hits with
three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman K.C. Beshore
(New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) relieved Hughes and
surrendered one walk and one hit in his one inning stint.
Sean Tuttle started and went 5.1 innings for Oglethorpe. He
allowed seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits with four strikeouts and
three walks. Chris Lucas suffered the loss for the Stormy Petrels
as he allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Matthew
Cornwell tossed the final two innings for Oglethorpe as he allowed
one hit during his stint.
Klinck had a career day as he went 5-for-6 with four runs scored
and an RBI. For his cycle, he singled in the third, homered in the
fourth, doubled in the sixth, tripled in the seventh, and singled
in the eighth.
Connolly and Poff each banged out three hits as Connolly added a
run scored and an RBI while Poff drove in two. Austin was 2-for-5
with three RBI and a run scored while Cook had three runs scored
and two RBI. Stanley was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Rizzo led the Stormy Petrels with three hits, three runs scored
and two RBI while Farrey was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
