ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The York College baseball squad saw their two game win streak come to an end as the North Carolina Wesleyan Bishops tallied five runs over their final three innings to post a 7-1 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mount, NC. The Spartans fall to 26-10 for the campaign while the Bishops improve to 27-19.
The Bishops got on the board in the bottom of the first on their senior day as the Spartan defense let down starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock). The Bishops converted a Spartan error into the game’s first run with two outs in the frame.
York tied the game in the second as Rob Andrews (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) singled, stole second, moved to third on wild pitch and then scored on a Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) RBI single to center. That would be the extent of the Spartan offense as they did not have a runner reach third the rest of the game while they had just one batter advance to second over the remaining seven innings of the game.
The Bishops took the lead for good in the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from third baseman Zollie Woodlief with two outs in the inning.
NC Wesleyan blew the game open with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh before closing out the scoring with two more tallies in the eighth.
Ben Moore earned the win in relief as he tossed a nearly perfect four innings for the Bishops. Moore’s lone blemish was a lead off walk in the sixth inning. That walk would be erased two batters later by a double play ground ball. Moore improves to 8-1 with the victory as he struck out one in his outing. Jonathan Lucas started and allowed a run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in his four innings of action. Jonathan Shearon tossed the final inning, allowing a single with a strikeout.
Rosenzweig absorbed the loss as he falls to 6-4. He tossed six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eighth hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Woodlief and Daniel Moore led the Bishop offense as they each banged out three hits. Woodlief was 3-for-3 with an RBI while Moore was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Zach Alexander and Justin Batts each added two hits. Batts scored a pair of runs while Alexander had an RBI.
Five Spartans each had a hit in the game as Andrews had the only run scored and Monti had the only RBI. All five Spartan hits were singles as the offense sputtered in the first game of the four-game trip.
York returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday against Christopher Newport in Newport News, VA. The Spartans and Captains get the day started at 12:00 pm.
