Spartans Fall at Montclair
LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – The York College baseball team dropped a tough 9-5 decision at Montclair State University on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Red Hawks improve to 24-13 while the Spartans fall to 27-13.
York opened the scoring in the second as sophomore CT Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) blasted a solo homer to left, giving the green and white the early advantage. The Red Hawks tied the game with a Zachary Brown RBI double in the bottom of the frame.
The Spartans recaptured the lead in the top of the third courtesy of a Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) RBI single to left and a Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) RBI opposite field single. The Red Hawks again answered as they tied the game at three in the bottom of the third. Montclair also received a pair of run scoring singles in the inning.
Montclair took their first lead of the game with a two run fifth
inning. The Red Hawks strung together four base hits in the inning
as they led 5-3. The hosts added three runs in the sixth inning to
take a commanding 8-3 edge. They again put together four hits in
the inning, knocking Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) from the game with two outs.
The Red Hawks got their final run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.
The Spartans closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to provide for the final four-run margin of defeat.
Rosenzweig suffered his fourth straight loss as he allowed eight runs on 15 hits with five strikeouts and a walk. He made 106 pitches as he falls to 6-5 for the campaign.
Sean Hille, the third of six Montclair pitchers, earned the win as he tossed a perfect 1.1 innings. He improves to 1-1 for the year. Nick Recchia started and allowed three runs on five hits and a pair of walks in 2.1 innings of work.
Michael Boggi led the Red Hawks as he was 3-for-4 with five RBI. Scott Evangelist added two hits and three runs scored while Matt Hartwick was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Jay Bionde chipped in with two hits and a run scored while Mike Ercolano came off the bench and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.
York was led by Poff and Connolly as the duo each had three hits. Poff was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Connolly was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Poff and Connolly combined to bang out six of the Spartans’ nine hits. Stanley and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) each had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans close out their 2009 regular season with a two-game trip to Ferrum College on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game is a 7:00 pm contest while Sunday’s game is set for a 10:30 am start.
