Spartans Drop Opener at Ferrum

FERRUM, VA – The York College baseball squad opened their final road trip of the season with an 8-4 loss to Ferrum College on Saturday evening in Ferrum, VA. The Spartans, who are fighting to remain alive in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament appearance, fall to 27-14 overall while the Panthers improve to 15-15 overall.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the top of the third as Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) led off the inning with a double to left. Monti moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) single. Worthman eventually came around to score on a Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) RBI single.

The Panthers reached Spartan starter Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) for four runs in the bottom of the third. The Ferrum uprising was aided by a Spartan error as two of the four runs were unearned in the inning.

York wasted little time in responding as they fashioned a two-out rally in the fourth to tie the game. Monti was again in the middle of the uprising as he singled, stole second and scored on a Joe Doyle (Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) RBI double to right center. Doyle came around to score when Rob Andrews (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) singled thru the right side, tying the game at four.

The Spartans looked like they would take the lead in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out. The Panthers got a double play to get out of the jam as the score remained tied at four. York loaded the bases again in the sixth but again came up empty as they could not push the tiebreaking run across the plate.

The Panthers broke the tie in the bottom of the eight. Michael Nolte singled to left with one out. He then moved to third as Gabe Moncada singled to left center as the Panthers chased Christenberry from the game. Jason Butterworth singled the game-winning run home as he hit a ball between Monti at third and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) at short, allowing Nolte to score. After the Panthers loaded the bases via a walk, another Spartan error allowed Ferrum to push the lead to 6-4. The Spartans committed a second error in the inning, allowing the Panthers to blow the game open and take an 8-4 lead.

The Spartans got two runners on in the ninth but it would not be enough for the Green and White as they dropped their second straight and their fifth in their last six games.

Nick Entminger earned the win in relief as he improves to 2-2. Entminger allowed a hit in his two scoreless innings of work. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Jon Wilson started for the Panthers and allowed four runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Christenberry absorbed the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits in 7.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked two as he falls to 7-3 with the loss.

Moncada led the Panthers as he was 3-for-4 with a runs scored. Butterworth was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Paul Jaglowski was the other Panther with multiple hits as he was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Four Spartans had multiple hits in the game led by Monti as he was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Worthman was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Poff was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Klink added two hits while senior Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) added two hits in five at-bats for York. The Spartans left 12 runners stranded in the contest.

The Spartans close out their 2009 regular season on Sunday morning as they face the Panthers in a 10:30 non-conference contest.
