Spartans Snap Skid with Win Over Diplomats

LANCASTER, PA – The York College baseball team snapped their two-game losing skid with a 10-5 non-conference win at Franklin & Marshall College on an overcast Wednesday afternoon in Lancaster, PA. The Spartans improve to 25-9 overall while the Diplomats fall to 19-12-1 overall with the loss.

The Spartans got on the board in the first as designated hitter Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) led off the game with a walk. He stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored when Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) recorded an RBI ground out to second.

The Diplomats tied the score in the bottom of the third with an unearned run but York quickly retook the lead in the top of the fourth as Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) singled and then scored when CT Stanley (Timonimum, Md./Calvert Hall College) ripped a doubled to deep left center, giving York the 2-1 lead.

The Diplomats would tie the game again in the bottom of the fourth as Blue Wells lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bill Murray from third.

The Green and White took the lead for good in the fifth as Chris Young (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) and Worthman led off the frame with back-to-back singles, putting Spartans on the corners with no out. Sophomore Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) cracked a double deep to left center, allowing Young to touch the plate and Worthman to scamper around all the way from first, giving York the 4-2 lead. After Connolly moved Cook to third with a very deep fly ball to the expansive Caplan Field outfield, Cook scored on a Poff sacrifice fly to center.
The Diplomats had a great chance to cut into the Spartan lead off reliever KC Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) as he surrendered a lead off triple in the bottom of the fifth. However, Beshore wiggled out of trouble with a strikeout, a foul out, and strikeout to keep the Spartan lead intact.

The Diplomats did manage to reach Beshore for a pair of unearned runs in the sixth after a rain delay in the top of the frame halted the game for about 30 minutes. That two run uprising trimmed York’s lead to 5-4.

The Spartans put the game out of reach in the seventh with some help from the Diplomats. The Spartans posted five runs on four hits, a pair of Diplomat errors,  a hit batter, and a walk as the York lead stood at 10-4 through six and a half innings of play.

F&M closed out the scoring with an RBI double from Eric Bornstein in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Rob Harrington (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) earned the win as he was the second of six pitchers for the Spartans as they went pitcher-by-committee in the non-conference game. Harrington tossed two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. He improves to 2-0. The Spartan pitching staff allowed just two earned runs on the day as York committed a pair of errors that allowed the Diplomats a trio of unearned tallies. Senior Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) was the most effective of the Spartan pitchers as he tossed a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts for the visitors.

Matt Metsch started for the Diplomats and absorbed the loss as he falls to 3-2. Metsch allowed five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in five innings of work.

Four Spartans had a pair of hits in the win led by Cook as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Matt Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) notched two hits and two RBI in his five at-bats while Stanley and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Murray went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Dips. Nick Rolnick and Bornstein each notched a pair of hits for the hosts. Bornstein had an RBI while Rolnick scored a run. John Brody was the other Diplomat with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Spartans return to Jaquet Field on Thursday as they host Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference match up. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm and will be preceded by the Spartans’ Senior Day ceremony as York’s four seniors will be honored prior to first pitch.
