Early, Late Hitting Keys Emory Victory Over Spartans
ATLANTA, GA – The York College baseball
team fell hard Friday afternoon, taking a 17-3 loss to a
perennially strong Emory University squad in the second game of the
Rawlings Southern Classic. The loss drops the Spartans’ early
2009 record to 0-2 while the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in
the first, courtesy of a pair of walks and five consecutive Emory
singles.
Showing the same resiliency as was displayed in
the season-opener, the Green and White battled back in the second
with three runs in the frame. Mark Miloski (Calverton,
N.Y./Riverhead) led off the Spartans’ half of the
second with a double to the gap in right center. Joe Doyle
(Stewartstown, Pa./Red Lion) then reached on a walk before
Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor
Central) laced York’s second double of the inning
down the right field line allowing Miloski to score. With runners
at second and third and nobody out, freshman Dustin
Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) slipped a single
through the left side of the Eagle infield to plate Doyle. The
speedy Worthman then stole second as the Spartans had runners on
second and third yet again. Kyle Cook (Pylesville,
Md./North Harford) added another run to York’s
total, as Meehan came into score on a groundout to shortstop. The
inning came to a close with the Spartans having scored three times
to slash Emory’s lead to 4-3.
Neither side would score again until the fourth
when Emory tacked on their fifth run of the game. A leadoff double,
a sacrifice fly, and a single into center gave the Eagles’
the 5-3 advantage.
Spartan starter Andy Rosenzweig (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) held tough through five innings
of play only surrendering those five Eagle runs on nine hits and
three walks.
The remainder of the game would be a different
story as the wheels came off for the Spartans. York’s young
bullpen struggled against the talented Emory lineup, allowing 12
runs over final three innings.
Emory pitcher Chris Monaco, who came on in
relief for starter Elliott Coor after two innings, quieted the
Spartan bats throughout his five frames. Monaco only allowed two
hits and struck out five to record the win. Brian Cournoyer
finished off the game by not allowing a run in his lone inning on
the mound.
Rosenzweig takes the loss for the Spartans to
begin the year at 0-1.
Eagle first baseman Steve Bralver posted a
4-for-5 day including a home run, five runs batted in and three
runs scored. Designated hitter Andrew Carroll went 2-for-3, while
leadoff hitter David Hissey recorded a 2-for-5 afternoon with two
doubles and two runs scored.
Worthman notched a 2-for-4 performance at the
plate, recording one R.B.I. Doyle went 1-for-2 with a walk, while
Meehan registered a 1-for-2 showing with one R.B.I. and one run
scored.
The Spartans will look to quickly regroup
tonight as the Green and White hits the field tomorrow in their
third game of the Rawlings Southern Classic. York is slated to take
on Oglethorpe at 4:00 pm.
