Spartans Fall in Ninth to St. John Fisher
WINTER PARK, FL-The York College baseball squad fell in the ninth inning as St. John Fisher posted a 4-3 win in the Spartans’ second game of the Florida portion of their 2008 spring trip on Wednesday night. The Spartans fall to 1-4 while the Cardinals improve to 4-1 for the campaign.
The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the second as they reached Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) for a pair of runs. Dave Roth gave St. John’s Fisher a 1-0 lead when he launched a solo homer with one out in the inning. The Cardinals added a second run on an error and a balk.
The Spartans cut the lead in half in the fourth as sophomore Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) doubled and scored on Mike Santoro’s (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) RBI single.
The Cardinals got that run back in the bottom of the fourth as Roth homered for the second time in the game as St. John Fisher led 3-1 through four.
York registered another run in the top of the sixth courtesy of a pair of errors by the Cardinals. Freshman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) singled with the bases loaded an one out to plate Santoro with York’s second run. Unfortunately, the green and white would leave them loaded as they were unable to get a hit in the clutch.
The Spartans tied the game in the seventh as Santoro drove in Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) with a sacrifice fly. A ground ball double play prevented York from breaking the tie as York continues to struggle with runners in scoring position.
The Cardinals won the game in the bottom of the ninth as Roth continued his monster day with a lead off single. Ross Langevin pinch ran for Roth and advanced to second on a Andrew Van Slyke single. Langevin then scored when Jason Nevada stroked a game-winning single.
Justin Lutes picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals. He tossed 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Ryan Hanson started and allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings of work.
Austin started for the Spartans and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. Freshman Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) suffered the loss as he allowed one run on three hits with a walk in 1.1 innings of action. He is now 0-1 for the campaign.
Offensively for St. John Fisher, Roth was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Van Slyke and Nevada each had a pair of hits while Van Slyke scored a run and Nevada plated the game-winner.
Connolly and Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) each had a pair of knocks for the green and white. Connolly scored a run while Santoro was 1-for-4 with two RBI?and a run scored.
The Spartans continue their trip on Thursday with another contest against St. John?Fisher. Game time is set for 10:00 am.
