Spartans End Skid with a Split with St. Mary's

YORK, PA-The York College baseball team snapped their seven game losing streak with a split with St. Mary’s College in a Capital Athletic Conference twinbill in York on Saturday. The Seahawks won game one 11-9 before the Spartans posted a 12-0 shutout win in the nightcap. The Spartans are now 5-16 overall and 4-6 in the CAC while the Seahawks are 13-13 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

In game one, York jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. St. Mary’s responded with a five run third inning to seize the momentum of the game. York cut the lead to one with a two spot in the bottom of the fourth only to see the Seahawks post another five-run inning in the fifth to take control of the seven inning game. After the Seahawks added a run in the top of the sixth, York put up a five run inning of their own, cutting the St. Mary’s lead to two but that would prove to be too much to overcome for the green and white as they fell 11-9.

Brian Briggs got the win as he allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with one strikeout and two walks in his four inning stint. He improves to 3-2 with the win. Mikel Iraola tossed the final 1.1 innings of the game to earn the save, his first of the season.

Senior Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings of action.

Mark Dattilo and Bobby Corton were the two Seahawks with multiple hits as they were both 2-for-3 with a run scored while Dattilo also had an RBI. Mike Broccolino was 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while J.P. Debrowski was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Steve Pokopec (York, Pa./Northeastern) led the Spartans as he was 3-for-4 with three RBI while Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) added a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, the Spartans got three runs in each the second and sixth innings, one run in both the third and fifth innings and a big four spot in the seventh inning to account for the scoring.

That offensive output would be more than enough for Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) as he had one of his best outings of the year. Austin scattered three hits in 5.2 innings of work as he struck out four and walked one en route to his second win of the year. Pokopec relieved Austin and was nearly perfect in his 2.1 innings of hitless work. Pokopec struck out two and walked just one in relief of Austin. Freshman Michael Roberts (Oceanside, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tossed the final inning and walked one as he completed the shutout for YCP.

Jon Gill took the loss as he allowed five runs, two earned, on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout in five innings of work. He falls to 2-3 with the loss.

The Spartan offense exploded for 18 hits led by Maxim as the big senior was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Maxim doubled twice as he had six hits in the double header. Sophomore Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) added two hits, including his first home run of the year, in addition to three RBI and a run scored to the Spartan attack. Anzalone was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while freshman Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while freshman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Matt Baden, Jacen Killebrew, and Blake Beaudoin each had a single for the Seahawks.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon as they host Salisbury in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The twinbill is a make up from March 8. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Jaquet Field.
