LEESBURG, FL-The York College baseball team continued their perplexing start to the 2008 season as they fell to 1-6 after a 4-2 loss to John Carroll University on Friday afternoon at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, FL. The Blue Streaks improve to 5-2 with the victory while the Spartans are off to one of their worst starts in the 21-year tenure of head coach Paul Saikia.
The Blue Streaks got on the board first in the top of the second as Matthew Pangallo walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Dan Sabella sacrifice fly.
The Spartans tied the game in the fourth as Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) drew a walk and then came around to score on a Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) two-out RBI double.
John Carroll recaptured the lead in the top of the sixth courtesy of a Pangallo RBI double that plated Bryan Robinett with one out.
The Blue Streaks got a pair of important insurance runs in the top of the eighth, pushing their lead to 4-1. Sabella drove in his second and third runs of the day with a two-run single in the frame.
York cut the lead to 4-2 as Craig doubled and eventually scored on a Blue Streak error but the green and white would be unable to score again as they fell for the third straight outing.
Paul O’Donnell earned the win for John Carroll as he went 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Matt Carhart earned the save as he got the final two outs of the game for the Blue Streaks.
Steve Pokopec (York, Pa./Northeastern) made his first start for the Spartans and he tossed three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Pokopec walked four and struck out two for YCP. Freshman Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) took the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in 3.1 innings of action. He falls to 0-2 with the loss. Fellow freshman Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) allowed two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in his 1.2 inning relief stint. Freshman Michael Roberts (Oceanside, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tossed a perfect ninth for the green and white.
Robinett paced the Blue Streak offense as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sabella was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Pangallo was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Santoro led York with two hits and an RBI while Craig was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) was the only other Spartan with a base hit in the game.
The Spartans close out their spring trip with a game against Rose-Hulman on Saturday morning at 9:30 am.
