Spartans Pick Up First Win of the Year

WINTER PARK, FL-The York College baseball team posted their first win of the year on Tuesday as the Spartans defeated Franklin College 7-5 in Winter Park, FL in the opening game of their five-game Florida trip. The Spartans improve to 1-3 overall while the Grizzlies fall to 0-4.

The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the opening frame. Sophomore Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) singled to lead off the Spartan half of the inning. He advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved to third on a Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) single. Anzalone came around to score when left fielder Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

The green and white added to the lead in the bottom of the second as senior Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony’s) doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and came around to score on a Jim Meehan (Mastic, NY/Eastport-South Manor Central) RBI ground out to second.

The Grizzlies got a single run in the third to cut the York lead to 2-1. The Spartans responded with a four-run bottom of the third to take a 6-1 lead. Junior Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) launched a two-run homer in the inning while Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) stroked a two-run double for the other two runs. The homer for Poff is his second on the young season.

Spartan starter Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) ran into some trouble in the fourth as Franklin got to him for three runs. Hughes got the first two outs of the inning but a walk, an RBI double, an RBI single, and an RBI double accounted for the Franklin scoring.

York got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Anzalone tripled and scored on a Klinck RBI ground out to short.

Franklin trimmed the York lead to 7-5 with a run in the eighth but freshman reliever Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) threw three solid innings of relief to keep the Grizzlies at bay.

Hughes picked up his first win of the year as he went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and a trio of walks. Gunder notched the first save of his career as he went three innings, allowing one run on two hits with three punch outs and one walk.

Derrick Patterson absorbed the loss for Franklin as he tossed 3.1 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Cody Nees provided 4.2 strong innings of relief as he scattered four hits with four strikeouts and one walk during his stint.

Offensively, Connolly and Frisch had big days. Connolly was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Frisch was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Poff was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored while Anzalone was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Maxim was the fifth Spartan with multiple hits as he was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Grizzlies were paced by Lance Noel as the right fielder was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Brandon Platt was 1-for-2 with a run scored and RBI for Franklin.

The Spartans continue their trip on Wednesday night as they face St. John Fisher. First pitch from Sanford Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
