Spartans Split Twinbill at Wesley

DOVER, DEL-The York College baseball split a Capital Athletic Conference twinbill with Wesley College on Sunday afternoon in Dover, Del. The Wolverines won game one 6-1 while the Spartans bounced back to take game two 7-2, salvaging the split. The Wolverines are now 23-9 overall and 10-7 in the CAC while the Spartans are 7-19 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

In game one, the Spartans drew first blood as sophomore Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y/Rocky Point) led off the top of the third with his second hit of the game, a single to left field. Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) sacrificed Anzalone over to second and then Anzalone moved to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) plated the Spartan first baseman with a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Spartans the early lead.

The Wolverines finally reached Spartan starter Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) in the fifth inning as a pair of solo home runs allowed the Wolverines to take a 2-1 lead. Scott Marshall tied the game with a two-out home to right and Dan Bunnion followed with a solo homer to right, giving the Wolverines the lead.

Wesley added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Tyler Burns launched a two-run homer. Marshall then pushed the lead to 6-1 with a two-run double off a tiring Christenberry.

Ryan Buckland earned the win for the Wolverines as he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings. Buckland struck out seven and walked three as he improves to 5-0 for the season.

Christenberry is still looking for his first win of the season as he falls to 0-6. He allowed six runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. He walked four and struck out one.

The Wolverine offense was led by Marshall as he was 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Bunnion was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Burns was 2-for-3 with two RBI with a run scored while Matt Pizzolato also had two hits for Wesley.

The Spartans were led by Anzalone as he had two of the Spartans’ four hits. Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) and Steve Pokopec (York, Pa./Northeastern) each had a single for York.

In game two, the Spartans got single runs in the first, second and third innings. In the first, Poff had a sacrifice fly to plate Anzalone who led off the game with a walk. In the second, Pokopec scored on an error and in the third, Pokopec had a sacrifice fly to plate to score Poff.

The Wolverines cut into the lead with a single run in the bottom of the third but York responded with a Poff RBI double to get that run back in the top of the fourth. Wesley pulled to within 4-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth but York tallied two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to close out the scoring.

That offensive outburst would be more than enough for Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock). Austin tossed eight strong innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk as he improves to 3-2. John Passwaters took the loss as he allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work. He falls to 2-3 with the loss.
