Spartans Go Two and Out In CAC Tournament

GLEN BURNIE, MD-The York College baseball squad had another first occur on Thursday as the Spartans were eliminated from the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference tournament, falling to Villa Julie 6-4 in the tournament’s second round. It will be the first time in the history of the tournament that the Spartans will not play on the weekend. The green and white entered the tournament as the sixth seed and dropped both of their tournament games. York is now 10-24 while Villa Julie is 19-17-1. The Mustangs advance to the weekend portion of the double elimination tournament where they will face Wesley in an elimination game on Saturday at top-seeded Salisbury.

The Spartans got on the board early as C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) doubled in Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) for the game’s first run in the top of the second inning. York pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third as Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) notched a two-run single before stealing second and coming around to score on a Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) RBI single.

The Mustangs trimmed their deficit in half in the bottom of the third as they plated a pair of runs courtesy of a Ryan Baione RBI ground out and a Wade Keenan RBI single.

Villa Julie took the lead in the fourth as they tallied three runs. The Mustang uprising was aided by a pair of Spartan errors that led to two of the runs being unearned.

As the Spartan bats were quiet over the last six innings, the hosts added a key insurance run in the seventh as Keenan tripled and scored on a Buddy Breidenbaugh sacrifice fly.

Johnny Jackson earned the win as he went six-plus inning, allowing four runs on ten hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He improves to 4-2 with the victory. Chris Hayden tossed two innings of one hit relief for VJC while Keenan notched the save with a perfect ninth inning of work.

Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, in 6.1 innings of work. He gave up nine hits as he struck out five and walked one. Christenberry, who went 6-0 last year, falls to 1-7 for 2008.

Keenan led the Mustang offense as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Jim Smith added two doubles, two RBI and one run scored. Breidenbaugh was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) paced the Spartans as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Maxim was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Craig was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Spartans return to the field on Wednesday, April 23 when they host Franklin & Marshall College in a non-conference contest. First pitch at Jaquet Field is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
