Spartans Suffer First-Ever Loss to Villa Julie
OWINGS MILLS, MD-The York College baseball squad experienced something that no other York College baseball team ever has. The Spartans lost to Villa Julie College 7-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Stevenson, MD. The Spartans, who entered the game 13-0 all-time against the Mustangs, fall to 8-20 overall and 6-10 in the CAC. The Mustangs improve to 17-14-1 overall and 6-10 in the conference. The Spartans had swept three games from the Mustangs last season including a 21-0 drubbing in the NCAA Tournament last May in Ferrum, VA.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the second as Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) doubled home Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) who had singled earlier in the inning. The Spartans would be unable to get Klinck home as they had to settle for one run.
The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth courtesy of a Spartan error. With two outs in the inning, Ryan Baione hit a ball to second that Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) could not handle as he was charged with an error. That miscue allowed Bryan Chouinard to single which scored two unearned runs.
Villa Julie pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on a Griffin Stewart two-out RBI double.
The green and white got that run back in the top of the sixth as Klinck hit into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded to score Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s). Mustang starter Derrick Nason would get out of the inning without any further damage as York left runners at the corners to end the frame.
The Mustangs blew the game wide open in the eighth inning as they struck for four runs. The big blow came off the bat of Wade Keenan as he had a three-run triple.
York got two runners on in the ninth but the five run deficit would prove to be too much to overcome as York suffered their 20th loss of the year.
Nason earned the win for the Mustangs as he allowed two runs on eight hits with one walk in 6.1 innings of work. He improves to 5-1 with the win. Chris Hayden earned the save as he tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. Hayden allowed one hit with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Freshman Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on 13 hits with one strikeout in 7.1 innings of work. He falls to 2-4 with the loss.
Keenan led the Mustang offensive attack as he was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Stewart also had three hits, an RBI and a run scored while Brett Steele was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Jim Smith was the fourth Mustang with multiple hit as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Klinck led the Spartans as he was 1-for-3 with both of York’s RBI. Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) was the lone Spartan with a two-hit day as he was 2-for-5 for the afternoon.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon as they travel to Messiah College to take on the Falcons. Game time in Grantham, PA is set for 3:30 pm.
