FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College baseball team was swept in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles won game one 9-5 and completed the sweep with a 14-3 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Eagles exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to seize control of the game. The Eagles had just four hits in the frame but a Spartan error and three walks aided the hosts in the uprising. York answered with five runs in the top of the fourth but left two runners in scoring position as they trimmed their deficit to 7-5.
Mary Washington scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to provide for their final margin of victory.
Senior Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) took the loss on the mound as he falls to 1-3. He allowed nine runs, with just four being earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. Frisch continued his control problems as he walked five and struck out one in his stint. Wes Hayden earned the win for the Eagles as he allowed five runs on eight hits in his complete game effort. He struck out six and walked three for UMW.
The Eagle offense was led by Eric Rehbein and Nick Espinosa as they each went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Will Wright added two hits, a run scored and an RBI for UMW.
York received one hit and two RBI from freshman third baseman Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional). Senior Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) added a hit, an RBI, and a run scored to the Spartan cause.
In the nightcap, the big inning did the Spartans in again. The Eagles tallied five runs in the bottom of the second, three in the bottom of the fourth, and two runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The Spartans scored two in the top of the fourth and one more in the seventh to account for their scoring.
Andrew Cox earned the win for the Eagles as he tossed a complete game allowing three runs on nine hits in his nine innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two in his stint.
Junior Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) suffered the loss as he allowed eight runs, just two of those being earned, on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk in four innings. He is now 1-2 for the campaign. Freshman Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) relieved Austin and tossed a perfect fifth inning but the three Spartan relievers that followed him allowed six runs on eight hits in the final three innings of the game.
The Eagles were led by Wright as he was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Seamus Bergen added three hits, two RBI and a game-high four runs scored. Riley Gorman was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI while Rehbein was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Alex Rossi was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Jon Sims was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) led the Spartan offense as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Chris Young (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) also had three hits to go along with a run scored and an RBI. Connolly and Young combined to have six of York’s nine hits in the game.
The Spartans conclude their season series with the Eagles on Monday as they host Mary Washington in a CAC contest. First pitch at Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
