Spartans Fall to St. Mary's in CAC Tilt

ST. MARY’S CITY, MD-The York College baseball squad saw their losing streak reach six with a 7-2 Capital Athletic Conference loss at St. Mary’s College on Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary’s City, MD. The Seahawks improve to 12-12 overall and 5-4 in the CAC while the green and white see their mark fall to 4-15 overall and 3-5 in the league.

The Seahawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as they reached Spartan starter Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) for a pair of runs. Matt Baden tripled with one out and came around to score on a Jacen Killebrew single up the middle. Killebrew stole second and advanced to third on a Spartan throwing error. After a flyout to shallow center, Matt Streich singled to right to plate Killebrew as the Seahawks took a 2-0 lead.

St. Mary’s extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a Mike Lance RBI single to right. The Seahawks doubled their lead in the sixth as they got to Rosenzweig for a trio of runs in the frame. The Seahawks got their three runs on three hits and a hit batter as the hosts continued to pull away.

St. Mary’s tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh before the Spartans scored two runs in the top of the eighth to get on the board. The Spartan runs came courtesy of a Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) RBI ground out and a Seahawk error.

Ryan D’Antuono earned the win on the mound as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits while he struck out six and walked one. He improves to 4-1 with the victory.

Rosenzweig suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits with one strikeout in six innings of work. He falls to 1-3 with the loss.

Offensively, Killebrew and Jason Turen each had two hits, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Mike Broccolino added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for St. Mary’s. Lance was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Spartans received two hits from Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove) and Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford). Connolly added a hit and an RBI to the six-hit Spartan effort.

York returns to action on Saturday as they host St. Mary’s in a conference twinbill. Game one at Jaquet Field is slated for 12:00 pm.
