Sea Gulls Erupt for 13 Runs in Final Three At-Bats to Down Spartans

SALISBURY, MD-The York College baseball squad held a 1-0 lead over the first five and a half innings of their 2008 Capital Athletic Conference first round game at #5 Salisbury University. Unfortunately for the green and white, Salisbury scored 13 runs over their final three at-bats to cruise to a 13-1 victory over the Spartans on Tuesday in Salisbury, MD. The Sea Gulls, who have won 33 straight games, improve to 33-1 overall while the Spartans continue their nightmarish 2008 season as they fall to 10-23.

The Spartans got on the board early as Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) led off the game and reached on a fielding error. He stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) single through the right side.

Spartan starter Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) was strong in the first five innings of the game. Rosenzweig gave up a first inning double, a second inning single, hit a batter in the third and then retired 10 straight Sea Gulls heading into the sixth.

Much like it has been all season, the Spartan defense suffered a lapse as an error started out the bottom of the sixth. That miscue would lead to four unearned runs in the frame as the Gulls to a 4-1 lead. Salisbury then blew the game open with an eight run seventh inning. The Sea Gulls sent 13 batters to the plate as they turned a close contest into a rout. Salisbury added their fifth unearned run of the game in the eighth, providing for the final margin of victory.

Eric Willey was the beneficiary of the Sea Gull offensive outburst. He tossed a complete game, allowing one unearned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. He improves to 7-0 for the season.

Rosenzweig suffered the loss but the freshman pitched well. He allowed 11 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in 6.2 innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. He did hit three batters and walked one batter intentionally. He is now 2-5 for the campaign.

Designated hitter Andrew Miler led the Sea Gull offense as he was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Randy Boyle was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI while Jordan Crystal was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Mike Celenza and Tyler Riley each added a pair of hits. Celenza scored two runs and drove in another while Riley had a pair of RBI and one run scored.

Maxim led the Spartan offense as the senior was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and freshman C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) each added singles to the Spartan offense.

York now travels to Villa Julie where they will take on the Mustangs in a tournament elimination game on Thursday. Game time in Owings Mills, MD is set for 3:30 pm.
