GRANTHAM, PA-The York College baseball team picked up a rare road victory as the Spartans handed the Messiah College Falcons a 12-9 loss in a non-conference contest on a sun-splashed Thursday afternoon in Grantham, PA. The Spartans improve to 9-20 overall while the Falcons fall to 20-8 with the loss.
York opened the scoring in the first as senior Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) stroked a two-run double to left. Steve Pokopec (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) added another run with a sacrifice fly to right as York took a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. York pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second as Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) each had RBI singles.
Messiah got a single run back in the bottom of the second but York got a sacrifice fly from Maxim in the fourth as the Spartan lead stood at 6-1 through three and a half innings.
The Falcons cut their deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on three hits with one Spartan error.
That is where the score would remain for the next two innings, setting the stage for a wild final three innings of play. The scoring outburst began with the Spartans getting two runs in the top of the seventh as Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) had an RBI single while Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) plated another with a fielder’s choice RBI. The Falcons got a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh from Craig Mease as the Spartan lead stood at 8-4.
York exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth with the big blow coming from a Klinck two-run double to center. Messiah would not go quietly as they tallied three runs in the bottom of the eighth as the York lead was 12-7. After the green and white failed to score in the top of the ninth, the Falcons put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the frame. The Spartans brought in starter Jason Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) to close out the victory as he got the final two outs of the game, leaving two Falcon runners on, to earn his first save of the year.
Junior Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) started and went three innings allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) earned the win as he was the second of six Spartans to toe the slab. Frankenfield allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Christenberry earned his first save with two third of an inning of work. He allowed one hit and struck out another.
Chandler Shaeffer took the loss as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and a trio of walks in 6.1 innings of work.
Klinck and Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) led the Spartan offense as they each had three hits. Klinck chipped in with three RBI while Poff drove in one and scored another. Santoro, sophomore Mike Connolly (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) and freshman C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) each added a pair of knocks for York. Santoro had two RBI and a run scored while Connolly and Stanley each scored a pair of runs for York.
Mease led the Messiah offense as he was 3-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored. Ben Snyder chipped in with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored for the Falcons. Kyle Stuckey and Sheldon Witmer each added two hits to the Falcon offensive attack.
The green and white close out their Capital Athletic Conference regular season slate on Saturday afternoon as they face Villa Julie in a conference twinbill. Game one on Saturday is slated to start at 12:00 pm at Jaquet Field.
