#13 Blue Jays Explode Early, Roll Past Spartans

BALTIMORE, MD-The York College baseball squad suffered a tough 14-5 loss to nationally ranked Johns Hopkins University on a beautiful Thursday afternoon in Baltimore, MD. The Spartans fall to 11-25 for the campaign while the 13th ranked Blue Jays improve to 29-4.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two run home from Todd Emr. It was downhill from there for the green and white. The Blue Jays scored two runs in each the first, second and third innings to forge a 6-0 lead. They blew the game wide open with a five-run fourth inning as the lead ballooned to 11-0.
    
While the Blue Jays were busy scoring, York was struggling to get the offense going just one day after scoring 10 runs against Franklin & Marshall. The Spartans had just two hits and two walks through the first six innings of play.

The Blue Jays added to the lead with two more runs in the fifth, and one more in the sixth as the lead stood at 14-0 through six innings of play. The Spartans got five runs in the final inning to provide for the final score. York banged out four of their eight hits for the game in the ninth inning rally.

Dave Fioretti started and earned the win for the Blue Jays. He allowed two hits with two walks and a strikeout in four innings of work. He improves to 2-0 with the victory. His appearance began a march of five different pitchers for the Blue Jays as they went pitcher by committee over the final five innings of action. The first four relievers allowed just two hits and no walks in four innings. Harrison Taylor, their final hurler of the day, was roughed up for five runs on four hits with two walks in his one inning of work.

Junior Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) took the loss as he allowed 11 runs on ten hits in four innings of work. Austin struck out three and walked one as he faced 24 batters in his outing. He allowed four doubles and three home runs as the Blue Jay bats were booming all day. Austin falls to 3-3 with the loss.

Three Blue Jays had two hits each. Catcher Joe Borrelli was 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored. Rob Pietroforte was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Brian Youchak was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Emr was 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI.

Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) led the Spartans as he was 2-for-2 with an RBI. He was the lone Spartan with multiple hit. Steve Pokopec (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern), Chris Young (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land), and C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College) each had RBI singles in the ninth inning for York.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Christopher Newport University to face the Captains in a non-conference doubleheader. Game on is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
