WASHINGTON, DC-The York College baseball team snapped their five-game losing streak with a 30-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Gallaudet University on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Spartans improve to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while Gallaudet falls to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The Spartans began the day with a three run first inning. That was followed by a seven run second inning that increased York’s lead to 10-0 through an inning and a half. The offensive onslaught continued with five runs in the third and four in the fourth before Gallaudet got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. York did not score in the fifth but the Bison did with another single run. The green and white closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth and five spots in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Junior Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) earned the win as he went four innings, allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeout and no walks. He improves to 1-1 with the win. Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) relieved Austin and allowed one unearned run on two hits in his one inning of work. Steve Pokopec (York, Pa./Northeastern) was the third Spartan pitcher and he tossed the sixth inning allowing one walk while he struck out three. Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) tossed a perfect seventh inning and Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) finished up for the Spartans as he struck out two and walked two others in his one inning of action.
Zane Noschese suffered the loss as he allowed 15 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits with four walks and one strikeout. Noschese allowed 15 hits as he faced 31 batters in his three innings of action. Eric Smithson tossed four innings in relief of Noschese and he allowed 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits with five walks and on strikeout. Kevin Alley threw the final inning and he allowed four runs on five hits with one walk.
Offensively, freshman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) led the Spartans with four hits as he scored six runs and drove in four others. Three Spartans had three hits led by Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) as the junior second baseman was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) relieved Craig and went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) was 3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring Grove), Mike Santoro (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), Jim Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central), Chris Young (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land), C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall College), and Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) each added two hits to the season-high 27-hit Spartan attack.
Warren Keller, Alley, Noschese, and Justin Lathus each had one hit for the Bison. Keller and Noschese scored the Bison runs while Ryan Lentz had Gallaudet’s lone RBI.
The Spartans step out of conference play on Thursday as they face Elizabethtown in a non-conference contest. Game time in Elizabethtown is set for 3:30 pm.
