
ATLANTA, GA-The York College baseball continued their offensive
struggles as the Greensboro College Pride downed the Spartans 10-3
in the final day of the Emory University Rawlings Southern Classic
in Atlanta, GA on Sunday morning. The Spartans lost all three of
their games at the season-opening tournament as they managed a
combined seven runs in 27 innings of action. York is now 0-3 while
Greensboro improves to 9-3 for the campaign.
The Spartans got runners on in each of the first two frames but
inning ending double plays ended each threat. Greensboro did not
waste their first good chance as they touched Spartan starter
Tim Frisch (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) for a
pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Travis Brewer stroked a
two run double down the left field line to give the Pride the
lead.
The Spartans got two more hits in the top of the third but a base
running error ended another York threat.
Greensboro added a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Dan
Poindexter walked, advanced to third on a James Hone double and
scored on a Brewer ground out to short.
After the Spartans got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth
courtesy of a Mike Connolly (Selden,
N.Y./Newfield) RBI single, the Pride blew the game open
with a four-run bottom of the sixth. Greensboro got their four runs
on three hits with one Spartan error as the lead grew to 7-1.
The Pride added three insurance runs off Spartan reliever
Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) in
the bottom of the eighth, increasing their lead to 10-1.
York got a pair of runs in the top of the ninth as Jim
Meehan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor Central) had a
sacrifice fly and freshman Rob Klinck (Stanhope,
N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) added an RBI single to
account for the two York runs.
Kent Gilliland earned the win as he tossed 5.2 innings, allowing
one run on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. He improves
to 1-0 for the campaign. Torry Poholsky earned the save as he
worked 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three
strikeouts and one walk. The save is his first this season.
Frisch suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on
six hits in six innings of work. He struck out four and walked
three in his season-opening stint. Frankenfield allowed three runs
on five hits in his two innings of action. He walked one and did
not record a strikeout in the loss.
Brewer led the Pride as he was 2-for-3 with a trio of RBI. Jacob
Tomb was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Anthony
Corona was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Alex Guerra added
a hit, two RBI, and a run scored.
Klinck made his first start a memorable one as the freshman went
3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) was the other Spartan with multiple hits as he was
2-for-4 with a run scored. Connolly was 1-for-4 with an RBI while
freshman Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North Harford)
was 1-for-3 with a run scored in his first collegiate start.
Both teams finished the game with 11 hits but Greensboro had three
extra base hits while all of York’s hit were singles.
The Spartans grounded into a pair of double plays and left
six runners stranded.
The Spartans will now travel to Orlando, FL where they will play
five games on the second half of their annual spring trip. The
Spartans kick off their stay in Orlando on Tuesday when they face
Franklin College at Rollins College. The game is slated to start at
10:00 am.
