Spartans Split Twinbill at Christopher Newport
NEWPORT NEWS, VA-The York College baseball squad split a Sunday
doubleheader with Christopher Newport University in Newport News,
VA. The Captains won game one 6-0 while the green and white bounced
back to capture a 5-2 in the nightcap. York now stands at 12-26
while CNU is 28-12.
In the opener, Captain starter Kenny Moreland dominated the green
and white. He allowed a single to Mike Connolly (Selden,
N.Y./Newfield) in the first inning. That would be the only
Spartan hit he allowed in seven innings. Moreland walked one and
hit another batter as York never got any going against the senior
right-hander who is the Captains’ all-time wins leader.
Moreland struck out nine as he improves to 12-0 for the season. He
also had his number retired prior to the start of the contest.
The Captains got all the runs they needed in the second as Matt
Neal had a sacrifice fly. CNU built the lead to 6-0 with a five
spot in the fourth inning. The Spartans aided the Captains in the
uprising with an error in the frame.
Freshman Andrew Rosenzweig (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) suffered the loss despite pitching a
solid game. Rosenzweig allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits
with a walk and two strikeouts. He falls to 3-6 with the setback.
Fellow freshman Taylor Gunder (Red Lion, Pa./Red
Lion) tossed the sixth inning, allowing one hit with two
strikeouts.
The Captains were led by Mike Giarrizzi as the centerfielder was
4-for-4 with an RBI. David Fennessey and Matt McDaniel each had a
hit and and two RBI while Ryan McDougal had one hit and scored two
runs.
In the nightcap, CNU struck first with a two-run rally in the
fourth. Alex Owen had an RBI single and Trae Bailey had a solo
homer to account for the Captains’ two runs.
The Spartans answered the Captains with a five-run top of the
fifth. York’s first run came on a sacrifice bunt attempt that
turned into an error. The Spartans then tied the game on a Connolly
sacrifice fly to center. Ryan Poff (York, Pa./Spring
Grove) gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead with an RBI single.
Senior Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St.
Anthony’s) then launched a moon shot home run to
right, extending the Spartan lead to 5-2.
That would be enough for Spartan starter Jason
Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown) as the sophomore
right-hander tossed a complete game. Christenberry allowed two runs
on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.
Christenberry improves to 2-7 with the win.
Brandon Berry suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits
with three strikeouts and two walks in five innings. He falls to
2-2 for the year. Josh Hankins pitched two innings of scoreless
relief for the Captains.
Maxim led the Spartan offense as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI on his
third home run of the year. Poff chipped in with two hits, an RBI
and a run scored. Freshman C.T. Stanley (Timonium,
Md./Calvert Hall College) added two hits and a run scored
for York.
Giarrizzi had two of the Captains’ four hits. Owen was
1-for-3 with an RBI while Baily was 1-for-2 with a run scored and
an RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel
to Montclair State University to face the Red Hawks in a
non-conference tilt. First pitch at Yogi Berra Stadium is set for
3:30 pm.
