Brower and Young Named ABCA All-South Region
YORK, PA-The York College baseball team had two seniors earn spots on the ABCA 2007 All-South Region squad as the teams were announced recently. Senior shortstop Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) and senior right-handed pitcher Chris Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) both earned second-team all-region honors for the Spartans. Both served as Spartan captains this year. Young also earned the South Region Rawlings Gold Glove award signifying him as the outstanding defensive shortstop in the region.
Brower finished his senior year with a mark of 8-3 with an ERA of 1.62. He allowed opponents to hit just .204 against him as he tossed a school-record 94.1 innings. Brower made 15 appearances with 12 of those being starts. He had four completed games, one shutout and two saves for the green and white.? Brower finishes his career with school records in victories (27), innings (326.2), and strikeouts (242). He also finished fourth in appearances (53), third in shutouts (3), and third in complete games (13).
He was a four-time All-CAC pitcher including a first-teamer this season. Brower was an All-South region selection last year in addition to being named a two-time District II Academic All-America.
Young finished his senior year hitting .375 with 52 runs scored, 30 RBI, 12 doubles, three triples, and four home runs. He started all 46 games for the green and white as he posted a team-high .474 on-base percentage and a top slugging percentage of .554. He had a team-high 93 total bases while he walked 25 times in addition to being hit by 11 pitches. He also stole eight bases and notched a fielding percentage of .940.
Young was a three-time All-CAC selection for the green and white. For his career, Young notched 231 career hits, 125 RBI, 174 runs scored, and 52 doubles. His career batting average was .359 while he recorded 337 total bases. He ranks third all time in hits, tied for fourth in doubles, fourth in total bases, second in runs scored and first in walks.
Spartan head coach Paul Saikia was pleased to see his senior standouts recognized.
“Chris and Jeff had the responsibility of captaining a very young team this year,”
states Saikia. “Based on our success, I would say they did a tremendous job. I'm glad now that they've been recognized for their individual play as well. Obviously, as their numbers show, they played at a very high level. I only wish there were columns to show the intensity and intent they both brought to the field every day of their careers.”
The Spartans finished the season with a record of 32-14 as they finished third at the 2007 NCAA Division III Ferrum Regional. Brower and Young combined to lead the Spartans to 112 victories in the last four years.
