Austin Twirls a Gem in the Spartans' 5-1 Win over Methodist
FERRUM, VA-Sophomore right-hander Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) twirled a complete-game gem as the York College Spartans eliminated the Methodist University Monarchs 5-1 on Friday afternoon in the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament in Ferrum, VA. The Spartans improve to 32-13 overall while the Monarchs end their season with a record of 30-15. The victory is the Spartans' third straight as they held off elimination again.
The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the first as they reached Monarch starter Elliot Bisplinghoff for four runs in the bottom of the first. After Bisplinghoff retired lead off hitterJeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) to begin the game,Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) singled and stole second. Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) walked and then freshman Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) loaded the bases with a single to right. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill) plated Craig with the first run of the game courtesy of a single to center. Junior Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony's) then walked to force in Poff with the Spartans' second run. After Bisplinghoff got a pop up, freshman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) drilled a single to center, scoring Connolly and Bednarczyk for York.
That would be more than enough for Austin as he dominated the Monarchs early in the game. He allowed a single in the second and the fourth and walked a batter in the fifth as he was in complete control.
The Spartans added a run in the seventh as Young was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Craig single to left and scored when Connolly hammered a single to right.
The Monarchs threatened in the eighth with a pair of two out singles but Austin wiggled out of the jam with a ground out. Methodist did manage to spoil the shutout in the ninth as Michael Ellsworth singled and moved to third on a Kyle Eudy double to right. Ellsworth scored on a Scott Russell fielder's choice in the hole at short. The Spartans caught a break on the play as Eudy attempted to go to third and was nabbed by Young who made the stop in the hole. The ensuing run down allowed Russell to advance to third but he got doubled up on a line drive to Young, ending the game.
Austin tossed the complete game as he improves 8-3. He allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Bisplinghoff allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts as he also went the distance. He falls to 7-2 for the campaign.
The Spartans were led by Connolly as the freshman was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Craig continued his outstanding tournament with two hits and a run scored. Bednarczyk was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Anzalone finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Eudy and Russell paced Methodist as they were each 2-for-4. Russell added the Monarchs' lone RBI.
The Spartans look to continue their run and gain a measure of revenge as they play the host Panthers from Ferrum for the right to advance to the regional championship. First pitch is scheduled for noon. The Panthers humbled the green and white 10-2 in the tournament's opening round. The winner of the York - Ferrum game moves on to face Emory in the championship round of the tournament at 4:00 pm.
