YORK, PA-The York College Spartan baseball
team continued its push to the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament
with a 7-3 win over Gettysburg College in regional play on a
gorgeous Tuesday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 28-9
overall while the Bullets fall to 25-11 for the season.
The Spartans, with some help from the Bullets, exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) opened the scoring as he drew a one-out bases loaded walk. Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) then hit a made-to-order double play grounder to short that Bullet shortstop Sam Stabert misplayed for an error. That error scored a second run and extended the inning. Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) hit a ground out to first that should have ended the inning but allowed Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) to score the game’s third run. Matt Austin (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) singled to short, scoring Poff, making it 4-0 Spartans. Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony’s) plated Craig with the inning’s final run as he singled to center.
The Bullets got on the board in the second as Brian Pernice banged a solo homer just over the left field wall, cutting the Gettysburg deficit to 5-1. The Spartans got that run back in the bottom of the third thanks to an Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) sacrifice fly.
The Spartans added another run in the fourth as Craig ripped a shot to left that ended up as a sacrifice fly, scoring Santoro with the Spartans’ seventh run of the game.
Pernice went deep again in the top of the seventh, trimming the Spartan lead to 7-2. The Bullets closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth with a run scoring force play from Mark Campo.
Spartan starter Chris Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) tossed the complete game as he improves to 8-1 overall. Brower allowed three runs on 10 hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks in nine innings. The complete game is his third of the season.
Ryan Dwyer took the loss as he allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He falls to 0-1 with the loss. The Gettysburg bullpen combined to allow one run on four hits with three walks in five innings of action.
Three Spartans collected multiple hits in the win. Poff was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Connolly was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill) was the third Spartan to record a pair of hits as he was 2-for-4.
Pernice led the Bullets with his two home runs. Joe Bonyai banged out three hits as he combined with Pernice to collect five of the Bullets’ ten hits.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they host Johns Hopkins in a regional tilt at 3:30 pm. The game is the final home contest of the 2007 campaign.
