Third-Ranked Cortland Rolls Past Spartans on Senior Day in York
YORK, PA-For the second straight Saturday,
York College baseball team suffered a shutout loss to a nationally
ranked team as the third-ranked SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons downed
the Spartans 14-0 at Jaquet Field. The Red Dragons improve to 30-4
overall while the Spartans fall to 26-9.
Cortland got on the board first in the fourth. Anderson Gardner began the uprising with a bullet off the right field wall for a double. He came around to score when catcher Mike Zaccardo singled to left center. Zaccardo came home two pitches later as senior right fielder Dan Maycock launched a long two-run homer to left center, increasing the Red Dragon lead to 3-0. The Red Dragon kept the pressure on Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) with a pair of walks to put runners at first and second with two outs. Joey Russo capped the scoring in the inning with a double down the right field line, scoring Travis Robinson and Anthony Coromato, who had each walked earlier in the inning, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Red Dragons added a run in the sixth on a Matt Vitalone solo homer to center. The tater was Vitalone’s fifth of the campaign.
Cortland poured it on in the seventh as they struck for eight more runs. The highlight for the Red Dragons was a grand slam to deep right from Robinson. Spartan reliever Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) gave up a single and then loaded the bases with a pair of walks, setting the stage for Robinson’s blast. Jim Basnight added a two-double double to left in the inning while Zaccardo had the inning’s other run scoring hit.
Cortland starter George Jweid held the Spartans in check during his 6.1 innings of work. Jweid allowed no runs on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He improves to 5-1 overall. Nick Baker threw a perfect inning for the Red Dragons while Corey LaRoche also tossed a perfect inning.
Austin took the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He falls to 6-3 with the setback. Hughes had a rough outing as he allowed six runs, four earned, on three hits with two walks in his third of an inning of work. Senior Brendan Gilroy (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) tossed two hitless innings for York.
Offensively, the Red Dragons were led by Zaccardo as he was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Robinson was 1-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Maycock was 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Spartans lone extra base hit came from freshman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) as he doubled to right center with two outs in the fifth. Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point), and Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) each had a single for York as the Spartans mustered just four hits for the day.
The green and white continue their weekend home stand with a game against Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Jaquet Field is set for noon.
