Sloppy Spartans Hold Off Bridgewater on a Chilly Friday

YORK, PA-The York College baseball squad survived a brutally cold day and a comeback attempt from Bridgewater College as the Spartans outlasted the Eagles 6-5 on Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans improved to 19-5 overall, including 7-0 at home, with the win. The loss snaps the Eagles’ three-game win streak as they fall to 10-16 overall.
The Eagles struck first thanks to a Spartan error. Eagle lead-off man Jono Brooks reached on an error, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on a ground out. York tied the game in the bottom of the first as senior Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third and scored on a Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) ground out to second.
The second inning saw the Spartans get a pair of gift-wrapped runs. Freshman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) recorded back-to-back singles with one out. The Spartans then pulled off a double steal. Bridgewater catcher Bret Mottice threw the ball into left field attempting to nab Anzalone. That allowed Anzalone to score and Santoro to head to third. Left fielder Mitchell Edwards threw the ball to third attempting to nail Santoro but the throw bounced away allowing Santoro to scamper in from third as the York lead grew to 3-1.
The Spartans added to the lead in the third, and again, the Eagle defense aided in the Spartan rally. Young led off the inning with a single to left. He advanced to second on a ground out. After a ground out, freshman Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) stroked a double down the right field line to plate Young. Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) then laced a single to left that was misplayed by Edwards, allowing Connolly, who had stopped at third, to score the Spartans’ fifth run.
The Eagles trimmed the lead to 5-2 on an Andrew Chrismer homer to left in the fourth.
Both teams tallied runs in the seventh. Bridgewater’s run came on a Ricky Read sacrifice fly to deep center while York’s run came on a Young homer off the top of the wall down the leftfield line.
The Spartans gave the Eagles a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as a misplayed pop up with two outs and two on, allowed Bridgewater to trim the Spartan lead to 6-5 heading to the ninth.
Sophomore Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) came in to pitch the top of the ninth and got the Eagles in order with a pair of strikeouts, earning his third save of the year.
Sophomore Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) earned the win as he tossed 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on nine this with a walk and a strikeout. Austin improves to 5-1 with the win. Freshman Jason Christenberry (Yoe, PA/Dallastown) relieved Austin and tossed a solid 1.2 innings. He allowed the two unearned runs in the eighth on one hit and one error.
Justin Folks suffered the loss as he allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk in his 6.1 inning outing. He is now 0-3. John Sinclair relieved Folks and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
Offensively, Young and Santoro paced the Spartans with three hits each. Young drove in one and scored three runs while Santoro scored one run for York. Connolly was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Designated hitter Michael Lenox led the Eagles with three hits while Mike Graves added two hits and a run scored. Chrismer drove in a run and scored one with his third round tripper of the year.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Salisbury to face the Sea Gulls in the second game of the regular season series between the two conference rivals. First pitch from Salisbury is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
