YORK, PA-The York College baseball squad
earned a critical 3-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
Salisbury University on an overcast Wednesday afternoon in York.
The Spartans improve to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in the CAC while the
Sea Gulls, who are ranked eighth in Division III, fall to 22-4 and
5-2 in the league.
The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the
second as Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) plated Anthony
Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) with an RBI single. York
added another run in the third as senior Jeff Young (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) launched a long homer to left, giving the green and
white the 2-0 lead.
The Gulls loaded the bases in the sixth but
Spartan starter Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) got a
strikeout and a fly out to end the threat. Salisbury finally
reached Frisch in the seventh courtesy of an Andrew Jensen RBI
double. Salisbury was poised to get more runs but Frisch coaxed
Mike Celenza into a ground out to Young to end the threat.
York got that run right back in the bottom of
the seventh as Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St.
Anthony’s) singled and then advanced to third on a throwing
error by catcher Pete Callahan. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia,
MD/River Hill) drove home Maxim with a single.
Senior Chris Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford)
relieved Frisch in the ninth and set the Sea Gulls down in order.
He was aided by an outstanding game-ending diving catch at second
by Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point).
Frisch improves to 4-0 with the win. He tossed
eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits with six strikeouts
and two walks. Brower picked up his first save of the year with his
perfect ninth inning. Ryan Bennick suffered his first loss of the
year as he allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits with seven
strikeout and no walks in 6.1 innings of work. Bennick falls to 6-1
for the campaign.
Young and freshman Mike Connolly (Selden,
NY/Newfield) led the Spartan offense as they each had two hits.
Young contributed an RBI and a run scored for YCP. Anzalone and
Maxim were each 1-for3 with a run scored while Santoro was 1-for-3
with an RBI.
Ryan Boyle and Brian Camper paced the Salisbury
offense as they both had a pair of hits. Jensen had the
Gulls’ lone RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Friday
afternoon as they host Bridgewater in a non-conference contest at
Jaquet Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
