suffered a hard-to-swallow 12-11 loss in 11 innings at Lebanon

The game featured an offensive explosion in the first as the green and white scored four runs on five hits and an LVC error. The Flying Dutchmen responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of walks and two Spartan errors.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the second courtesy of a Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill) two-run double. York tacked on a single run in the top of the sixth on an Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) RBI single.
The Flying Dutchmen exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame, turning a 7-3 York lead into a 9-7 LVC advantage.
York responded with four runs in the top of the seventh as Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) stroked an RBI triple and came around to score on a Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) single. Freshman Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) then jacked a two-run homer to put York back on top 11-9.
The Flying Dutchmen drew to within one with an RBI ground out and then the Spartans intentionally walked Grant Weist to load the bases with one out. Spartan reliever Chris Frankenfield (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) coaxed a ground out back to the box but had to go to first, allowing the tying run to score. Frankenfield got a fly out to force extra innings.
The Spartans could only muster a Young double with two outs in the 11th in the extra two innings. The Flying Dutchmen started the bottom of the 11th with a Richie Schwartz single. After a sacrifice bunt moved pinch runner Mark Mehalko to second, reliever Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) struck out John Mentzer for the second out. Weist then singled to score Mehalko with the game-winning run.
Charley Kline earned the win in relief of starter Mike Snyder. Kline allowed four runs on six hits with one strikeout in five innings of work. Kline improves to 1-2 with the win. Snyder was tagged for seven runs on 14 Spartan hits in six innings of work as he earned the no decision.
The Spartans sent seven pitchers to the mound as they played their ninth game in ten days. Freshman Jason Christenberry (Yoe, PA/Dallastown) drew the surprise start and tossed the first inning, allowing three unearned runs on two walks and two Spartan errors. He struck out three in the inning. Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) was again very good as he threw three innings, allowing two hits in his stint. Pete Capwell (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) threw a perfect inning in the fifth. Freshman Evan Vonatski (Eastport, NY/Eastport-South Manor Central) came in for his second appearance of the year and was tagged for four runs on three hits with a walk in just a third of an inning. Brett Berry (Brightwaters, NY/Bayshore) relieved Vonatski in the sixth but allowed two more runs on three hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of work. Frankenfield allowed two runs in his two innings of work while Austin suffered his first loss of the year as he allowed the LVC run in the 11th.
Offensively, the Flying Dutchmen were led by Weist as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mentzer was 1-for-6 with three RBI while Brandon Thompson was 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Dan Kelly chipped in with two hits with three runs scored while Schwartz had two hits and two runs scored.
Connolly paced the Spartan offense with five hits in six at-bats with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI. Bednarczyk chipped in with two hits and three RBI. Young and Craig each added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
The Spartans will attempt to get back on the winning side of the ledger on Wednesday as they host Salisbury University in a critical Capital Athletic Conference on Wednesday afternoon at Jaquet Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
