Spartans Finish Season Sweep of Mustangs, 11-4, on Thursday
GLEN BURNIE, MD-The York College baseball
team won their seventh straight game on Thursday as they defeated
Villa Julie College 9-4 in a non-conference contest in Glen Burnie,
MD. The Spartans improve to 14-4 overall while the Mustangs fall to
5-7. York has won 13 of their last 14 games.
The Spartans jumped on Mustang starter Wade Keenan early. The green and white scored one in the first as Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) double. York tacked on two more runs in the second thanks to a Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) RBI double and a Young RBI single to plate Santoro.
York increased the lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) stroked an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Spartans added a trio of runs in the sixth, pushing the lead to 8-0. The Mustangs finally reached Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) in the bottom of the sixth as they got three runs on four hits and a Spartan error.
The Mustangs got another unearned run in the seventh, trimming York’s lead to 8-4.
The green and white closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth as freshman Mark Miloski (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) singled and scored on an Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) double.
Austin earned the win as he improves to 4-0. He tossed his team-leading third complete game of the year as he allowed four runs, two earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Ten of Villa Julie’s 11 hits were singles as Alex Laddbush’s second inning double was the Mustangs’ lone extra base hit. Keenan suffered the loss as he threw six innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He is now 1-3 for the campaign.
Offensively, the Spartans were led by Miloski as the freshman was 5-for-5 with two runs scored. Young was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Craig was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Poff had a pair of hits and drove in two while he scored another. Santoro had two hits in the game. Santoro’s hits came in his first two at-bats as he extended his consecutive hits streak to eight at-bats before having the streak snapped with his sixth inning pop out.
Buddy Breindenbaugh led the Mustang offense with three hits and a run scored. Jim Smith chipped in with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Laddbush and Ryan Baione each chipped in with a pair of hits to the Villa Julie offense.
York puts their win streak on the line on Saturday as they travel to Gallaudet to face the Bison. Game time in Washington, DC is set for 1:00 pm.
