YORK, PA-The York College baseball squad
remained hot as they earned their fifth consecutive win as they
defeated Montclair State 11-7 in non-conference action in York, PA.
The Spartans improve to 12-4 overall while the Red Hawks fall to
7-7 for the campaign.
The game was scoreless in the first third of the
game as Spartan starter Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock)
and Montclair’s Kevin Dalton matched each other zero for zero
over the first three frames. The Red Hawks got on the board first
in the fourth thanks to a Rob Bowness RBI double and a Lou Politan
sacrifice fly. York got on the board in the bottom of the inning as
freshman Mark Miloski (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) drilled a two-run
homer to right center, tying the game at two.
The green and white took a short-lived 3-2 lead
in the fifth on a Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) RBI
single to left center. Montclair responded with two runs in the top
of the sixth to take the 4-3 lead. The Red Hawks got one run on a
Thomas Meyer ground out to second while the other run came on a
Politan RBI single to left.
The Spartans recaptured the lead for good in the
bottom of the seventh with a four run inning. The first blow was a
solo homer to left by senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River
Hill). Red Hawk pitcher Mary Cabalar got the next two Spartans
before drilling Miloski with a pitch. Catcher Mike Santoro
(Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) then stroked a single to left and senior
Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) was hit by a pitch to load
the bases. Sophomore Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock)
then laced a bases-clearing double to center, giving York a 7-4
lead.
The Red Hawks got a single run in the top of the
eighth but York answered with another four run inning to take the
11-5 lead. The eighth inning uprising was keyed by a two-run single
to left by Santoro and a two-run double to right center by
Young.
Montclair got a pair of unearned runs in the top
of the ninth, providing for the final 11-7 margin.
Frisch earned the win as he improves to 3-0. He
tossed seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight
hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Jake Hughes
(Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) pitched a perfect eighth inning while
freshman Randy Bond (Brandywine, MD/Riverdale Baptist) was touched
for a pair of unearned runs in the ninth inning.
Dalton started and did not get a decision as he
tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits with six
strikeouts and two walks. Cabalar took the loss as he falls to 1-1
overall. He allowed six runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
He hit three Spartans in his stint, greasing the skids for the
Spartans’ seventh inning rally. William Traverso tossed the
final inning for the Red Hawks, allowing two runs on two hits with
three strikeouts and a walk.
Offensively, Santoro powered the Spartan offense
as he was 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Poff
(York, PA/Spring Grove) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored while
Young was 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Freshman Mike
Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) added two hits to the Spartan
attack.
Andrew Vicaro led the Red Hawks with three hits,
two runs scored, and an RBI. Scott Evangelist was 2-for-5 with
three runs scored. Politan added a hit and a pair of RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as
they host Gallaudet University in a CAC contest. Game time at
Jaquet Field is set for 3:00 pm.
