YORK, PA-York College senior righty Chris
Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) tossed the Spartans’
third straight complete game as the green and white defeated Villa
Julie College 4-1 in a non-conference contest on a sun-splashed
Sunday at Jaquet Field in York. In the win, Brower became the
Spartans’ all-time strikeout leader with his seventh inning
strikeout of the Mustangs’ Griffin Stewart. Brower now has
179 strikeouts for his career.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 10-4 while the Mustangs fall to 5-6 with the loss. York has won three straight and nine of their last ten.
It didn’t take the Spartans long to open the scoring. Mustang starter Buddy Breidenbaugh entered the game having not allowed an earned run in 11 innings of work this year. That lasted exactly two pitches because senior Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) launched Breidenbaugh’s second offering of the game deep over the left field wall for the 1-0 Spartan lead. Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) and Ryan Poff (York, PA/Spring Grove) sandwiched a failed sacrifice attempt to put runners at first and second with one out. The duo advanced to second and third on a ground out and came around to score when Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill) stroked a single up the middle, putting the green and white up 3-0.
The Mustangs got on the board in the second thanks to a Brian Moran sacrifice fly. Brower escaped further damage by retiring Storm Griffin on a fly ball to right, leaving a runner stranded at second.
The green and white added a single run in the third as Bednarczyk doubled in Poff for the 4-1 Spartan lead.
Brower handcuffed the Mustangs over the final seven innings of action. He allowed a single in the fifth and a bloop single in the eighth. The only other Mustang base runner came in the ninth as Brower grazed Wade Keenan with a pitch but he got a line out and a ground out to end the game.
Brower improves to 2-1 with the win. He scattered five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in his nine inning stint. Breidenbaugh settled in after the rocky first frame. He threw eight innings, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts, two walks and two hit batters.
Spartan starters Brower, Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock), and Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) have been outstanding over the last three games. They have thrown 27 innings combined, allowing three runs on 17 hits with 19 strikeouts and just one walk. During that stretch, their three opponents hit just .184 (17-for-92) against the three Spartan hurlers.
Bednarczyk led the Spartan offense with two hits and three RBI. Young was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Poff was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Moran was 2-for-2 with the Mustangs’ lone RBI. Kevin Rodgers, Stewart, and Keenan had Villa Julie’s other hits.
The Spartans return to action on Monday when they travel to Johns Hopkins to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference contest. Game time in Baltimore is set for 3:30 pm. The game is a make-up from Friday’s rain out in Baltimore.
