Spartans End Florida Swing 5-0
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The York College baseball
team remained red hot as the Spartans defeated St. John’s
University of Minnesota 5-3 in their final game of their 2007
spring trip. The green and white is now 6-3 as they have won five
straight. St. John’s falls to 2-7 overall with the loss.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the third as
junior Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St.
Anthony’s) launched a solo home run to lead off the
frame. Sophomore Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring
Grove) drove home the inning’s second run with a RBI
fielder’s choice with the bases loaded.
York added a trio of runs in the fourth as
freshman Mark Miloski (Calverton, NY/Riverhead)
opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Freshman
Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) singled and
advanced to second when the throw went to third to try to get
Miloski. Maxim continued his big day with a triple that scored
Miloski and Connolly, putting the Spartans up 4-0. Maxim eventually
scored on a fielding error by Johnnies’ third baseman Matt
Meyer.
Spartan starter Matt Austin
(Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) was cruising until the top
of the eighth when the Johnnies got to the big right-hander for
three runs. St. John’s used three hits including a pair of
infield hits, a Spartan error, and a hit batter to score the three
runs.
Austin weathered the storm and came out for the
ninth. He set the Johnnies down in order to put the finishing
touches on the Spartans’ first complete game of the year.
Austin improves to 2-0 with the victory as he finished the game
allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts
and no walks.
Dusty Wilfahrt suffered the loss as he allowed
five runs, four earned, on six hits two strikeouts and one walk in
three innings of work. Reliever T. J. Nelson kept the Johnnies in
the game as he gave up just three hits with one walk and five
strikeouts in five innings of stellar relief.
Maxim was the Spartans’ offensive star
with two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Senior Bryan
Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hil) and freshman
Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point)
each added a pair of hits to the Spartan offensive attack.
The St. John’s offense was led by John
Heinbigner as he was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jay Kasner had the
Johnnies’ other RBI. Austin did not allow St. John’s to
get an extra base hit in the game.
The Spartans return to York on Sunday before
heading to Dickinson College on Tuesday to face the Red Devils in a
non-conference contest. Game time in Carlisle is set for 3:00 pm.
