Spartans Roll Past Alma in Florida
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The York College baseball
team rolled to their third straight game with a 17-7 win over Alma
College from Michigan in the Spartans’ third game of their
five-game Port Charlotte trip on Thursday. The Spartans, winners of
three straight, improve to 4-3 overall while the Scots fall to 1-4
for the campaign.
The green and white, much like they have during
the Port Charlotte portion of the spring trip, jumped out to an
early lead. York struck for one run in the first as Jeff
Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) doubled and scored on a
Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point)
single.
The Spartans tallied five runs in the second as
Dennis Maxim (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St.
Anthony’s) and Young each drove in a run to make it
3-0 York. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River
Hill) made it 5-0 with a two-run single. Freshman
Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point)
drove in the final run of the frame with an RBI single.
York added another five spot in the third as
Bednarczyk singled in a run with the bases loaded. Craig then
stepped to the plate and jacked a grand slam for his first
collegiate home run as the Spartan lead grew to 11-0.
Alma got on the board in the top of the fourth
but York answered with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Craig continued his career day with a two-run double while Anzalone
added a sacrifice fly as the Spartan lead ballooned to 14-1.
The Scots scored two runs in the top of the
sixth and four more in the top of the eighth but the Spartans
closed out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the eighth
thanks to a Jimmy Meehan (Mastic, NY/Eastport-South Manor
Central) RBI single and a two-run knock from Dan
Smith (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East).
Tim Frisch (New Freedom,
PA/Susquehannock) earned his first win in the green and
white with seven innings of work. Frisch allowed three runs on 10
hits with nine strikeouts and no walks as he now stands at 1-0.
Joe Thiry took the loss as he allowed 11 runs
on 13 hits in 2.1 innings of action. Thiry walked one and struck
out another. Tom Montgomery and David Lewis followed Thiry to the
mound and they each surrendered three Spartan runs.
Craig led the Spartan offense with three hits
and a career-high seven RBI. Young was 4-for-4 with four runs
scored and an RBI while Bednarczyk was 3-for-5 with three RBI and
two runs scored. Designated hitter Mike Connolly (Selden,
NY/Newfield) added three hits and two runs scored. Maxim
and Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) were
the other two Spartans with multiple hits as they both collected a
pair of knocks.

hits and a pair of runs scored. Mike Slesinski added three hits and
two runs scored. Centerfielder Dan Merian was 2-for-5 with a pair
