Spartans Open Florida Swing with Big Win
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL-The York College baseball
team began the Florida portion of their spring trip with a 13-7 win
over Rose-Hulman on Tuesday in Port Charlotte, FL. The Spartans
improve to 2-3 overall while the Engineers are now 2-2.
The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to
a big second inning. The green and white loaded the bases and
scored their first run on a Mike Santoro (Manalapan,
NJ/Manalapan) single. Junior Dennis Maxim (Port
Jefferson Station, NY/St. Anthony’s) then unloaded
the bases with a three-run double down the left field line.
The Engineers answered with a bigger inning as
they fashioned a six-run top of the third. The six runs came on
five hits with one Spartan error.
The green and white tied the game at six in the
bottom of the third on a two-run single to left by freshman
Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield).
The Spartans captured the lead for good in the
bottom of the sixth as senior Jeff Young (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) stroked an RBI single to right, scoring
Connolly with the Spartans’ seventh run.
York blew the game open in the seventh, putting
up six runs keyed by a Connolly RBI single, an RBI double from
Santoro, a Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River
Hill) RBI single, and a two-run double from sophomore
Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point). The
other Spartan run came in on a wild pitch.
Rose Hulman scored the game’s final run in
the top of the ninth.
Spartan reliever Randy Bond (Brandywine,
MD/Riverdale Baptist) earned the win with two innings of
two-hit ball. He struck out one as he improves to 1-2. Senior
Brendan Gilroy (Ridley, PA/Ridley Park) started
and allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits in his five inning
outing. He struck out three but walked four. Sophomore Jake
Hughes (Schwenksville, PA /Souderton) tossed one inning,
allowing two hits and a walk while Brett Berry
(Brightwaters, NY/Bayshore) closed out the game and
allowed one run on two hits in his one inning stint.
Nick Maloney suffered the loss for the Engineers
as he allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings. He struck
out two and walked one. Derek Eitel allowed six more runs on 10
hits with a walk in three innings.
Connolly and Anthony Anzalone (Rocky
Point, NY/Rocky Point) powered the Spartan offense as they
both had three hits. Connolly added three RBI and two runs scored
while Anzalone scored once for YCP. Maxim added three hits, three
RBI, and a run scored. Freshman Mark Miloski (Calverton,
NY/Riverhead) added two hits and three runs scored while
Young was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Santoro also had a
pair of hits, two RBI and two runs scored. All nine Spartan
starters had at least one hit in the 19-hit barrage.
Kellen Hurst was 1-for-4 with three RBI and a
runs scored for the Engineers. Adam Knaack and Michael Matsui each
went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one runs scored.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday
afternoon when they face Concordia-Moorhead in the second game of
their five-game swing in Port Charlotte. First pitch is slated for
11:30 am.
