Spartans Split a Pair During Day Two of Rawlings Southern Classic

    ATLANTA, GA-The York College baseball team split their two games Saturday, falling to Emory University 6-5 before bouncing back to defeat Virginia Wesleyan 9-5 in the nightcap. The Spartans are now 1-2 overall.
    In the loss to Emory, the Spartans jumped on the board early as they tallied three runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Ryan Craig (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) drew a bases loaded walk, driving in the first Spartan run. Sophomore Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) plated the second Spartan tally with an RBI fielder’s choice. The third run came on a Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) single to left.
    York added a fourth run on a Mark Miloski (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) home run in the fourth. The blast was Miloski’s first collegiate home run. The Spartans grew the lead to 5-0 on an Anzalonoe RBI single to left.
    The Eagles finally got to Spartan starter Tim Frisch (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) in the sixth with a pair of runs.
    Emory went to the top of the ninth trailing 5-2 but the Eagles reached Spartan reliever Brendan Gilroy (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) for three runs. Gilroy walked the first hitter of the inning but then got a pop out and a fly out as it looked like the Spartans would get out of the inning. However, the next four Eagles got hits and the hosts took the one run lead.
    In the bottom of the ninth, Rich Babb came on in relief of Will Gumm and retired the first two Spartans he faced. Anzalone picked up his third hit of the day before Babb earned the save with a fly out to right.
    Gumm notched the win as he tossed three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and and a strikeout and a walk. Babb earned his second save with a scoreless ninth inning. Ian Granzer started for the Eagles and allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He struck out three and walked two.
    Sophomore Jake Hughes (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed a run on two hits in a third of an inning. Frisch allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in eight innings. Gilroy allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
    Offensively, Anzalone had three knocks and two RBI for the green and white. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River Hill) added two hits and a run scored while Miloski and fellow frosh Mike Connolly (Selden, NY/Newfield) each had two hits.
    Steve Bralver led the Eagles with three hits, a run scored and an RBI.
    In the nightcap, the Spartans fell behind early as the Marlins reached Spartan starter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) for a single run in the top of the first. The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single from catcher Mike Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan), an RBI from Bednarczyk, and a Craig RBI double.
    The Marlins pulled to within one with a single run in the top of the sixth. York quickly put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single from Poff.
    Virginia Wesleyan pulled to within one again with two runs in the top of the seventh but the Spartans again responded with a three-spot in the lower half of the inning. Bednarczyk had an RBI single in the inning while Craig drove in the other two with a triple.
    York scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth with a Frisch pinch-hit RBI double. VWC closed out the scoring with a single run in the top of the ninth inning.
    Austin picked up the win as he tossed six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Randy Bond (Brandywine, MD/Riverdale Baptist) earned the save as he threw the final three innings, allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout. Dave Whigham was stuck with the loss as he allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits in five innings of work. Whigham struck out five and walked three as he falls to 0-1. The four Marlin relievers that followed Whigham allowed six runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts in the final three innings of action.
    Miloski paced the Spartan offense with three hits while Craig was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Bednarczyk was 1-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Santoro added two hits, a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
    Matt Hudgins led the Marlins with four hits in as many at-bats while he also scored twice and drove in another.
    The Spartans conclude their stay in Atlanta on Sunday as they face the Emory Eagles for the second time. Game time at Chappell Park is set for 2:00 pm.
