York Falls in Season Opener
ATLANTA, GA-The York College baseball team
opened its 2007 season with a tough 3-2 10-inning loss to Virginia
Wesleyan on Friday morning in the opening round of the Rawlings
Southern Classic hosted by Emory University in Atlanta. The Marlins
have won four straight to start their season including three over
ranked teams including Rowan and Salisbury. The Spartans fall to
0-1 with the loss.
The green and white struck early as senior
Jeff Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) drew a
two-out walk and advanced to third on an error by the Marlin first
baseman. Sophomore Ryan Poff (Spring Grove, PA/Spring
Grove) promptly drove Young home with a singled to
left.
The score would remain 1-0 for the next six
innings until the Marlins finally reached Spartan ace Chris
Brower (Mont Clare, PA/Spring-Ford) for a single run in
the bottom of the seventh. Mike Marion doubled to start the inning
and pinch runner Sam Smith was sacrificed to third on a
fielder’s choice. After a strikeout, Phil Cadle lifted a
sacrifice fly to center, scoring Smith and tying the game at
one.
Neither team threatened in the eight or ninth
innings as they headed to an extra frame. In the top of the tenth,
freshman Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky
Point) singled to center. Fellow freshman Mark
Miloski (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) sacrificed Anzalone to
second. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk (Columbia, MD/River
Hill) notched an infield single, putting runners at the
corners with one out. Sophomore Ryan Craig (Rocky Point,
NY/Rocky Point) ripped a double that scored Anzalone and
put Bednarczyk at third. Chris Deanes relieved Brett Horowitz and
coaxed Young into a pop up to second. Deanes hit Poff to load the
bases but designated hitter Matt Austin (Shrewsbury,
PA/Susquehannock) grounded out to end the Spartan
threat.
Cadle began the bottom of the tenth with a
double and Brian Schweers had a bunt single to put runners at first
and third. Schweers advanced to second on a wild pitch but Spartan
reliever Randy Bond (Brandywine, MD/Riverdale
Baptist) got a pop up for the first out of the inning.
After an intentional walk to load the bases, Bond balked home a
run, tying the game at two. Ricky Allred then won the game for the
Marlins with a sacrifice fly to center as Schweers scored.
Deanes got the win with two-thirds of an inning
of work. He faced three hitters as he improves to 1-0 for the year.
Marlin starter Jesse Freeman went 5.1 innings, allowing one
unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Bond
absorbed the loss for the Spartans as he allowed two runs on three
hits with one strikeout and one walk in 1.2 innings of action.
Brower was very good in his first start of his senior year with one
run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in seven
innings of work.
Schweers led the Marlin offense with two hits
and a run scored while Cadle was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an
RBI. Allred was also 1-for-3 in addition to collecting the
game-winning RBI.
Bednarczyk, Craig and Poff each had two hits as
the first four hitters in the order were 7-for-17 while the
remaining five hitters were 1-for-20. Craig and Poff each and an
RBI for the Spartans while Young and Anzalone scored the Spartan
runs.
York returns to action on Saturday with a pair
of games in the tournament. The Spartans face the host Eagles on
Saturday at 10:00 am followed with a second game against the
Marlins at 2:00 pm.
