Guild Selected as Spartan Athlete of the Week on February 21, 2012

YORK, Pa. – Following her stupendous performance at the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships, York College women’s swimmer Michaela Guild has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week.

The senior put together a tremendous weekend as she broke three Spartan records (each of which belonged to her previously), captured two medals, and won the 1,650 freestyle.

Beginning with Friday’s morning preliminaries, Guild set a tremendous tone for the Championships by shattering the program’s best mark in the 500. Besting her own previous school record, she swam to a 5:14.34 lowering the mark by over six seconds. Having qualified for the evening finals, Guild turned in a 5:15.44 to nab third-place and secure her first CAC Championships medal.

On Saturday, Guild finished fifth in the 200 individual freestyle with a 2:00.11 while aiding York’s 800 freestyle relay squad to an 8:14.92, good for fourth.

It would prove to be Sunday’s finals however, where Guild put together her most impressive effort. Seeded fifth heading into the 1,650, the experience senior swam in a comfortable fourth for a good portion of the event. However, once she began to pick up the pace, she began passing each of the three swimmers in front, moving steadily toward the lead. Eventually taking over the top spot, Guild never gave it back as she won the event, her final individual race, in a Spartan record-time of 17:58.36. Prior to this victory, her first championship in her record-setting career, Guild had finished fifth, fifth, and fourth in her three previous appearances in the 1,650 at the CAC Swimming Championships.

Guild also broke the program-record for the 1,000 during the first portion of the 1,650. During the first 1,000 yards, the senior covered the distance in 10:58.31, lowering her mark set last year of 11:03.48.

Overall, Guild and the Spartans took fourth at the 2012 CAC Swimming Championships, only the second time in over a decade in which the Spartans have placed as high as fourth.
