Saliba Named Spartan Athlete of the Week for January 9

YORK, PA – York College senior wrestler George Saliba has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 8, 2012.

Saliba led the 12th ranked Spartan wrestling squad to four victories at the Ursinus College North/South Duals on Saturday afternoon. The Green and White defeated Wesleyan 30-6, #20 Stevens 29-12, U.S. Coast Guard Academy 47-0, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 38-9. Those four triumphs improve the Spartan mark to 12-2 overall, including a current nine-match winning streak.

Saliba was simply outstanding as the senior earned four wins on the day including three via pinfall. He opened his day with a 5-1 win over Wesleyan's Dave Amrhein in his first match of the day.

Saliba then dominated his next three opponents, earning pins in each of the matches. His pin of Stevens’ Tyler Maher came just 1:12 into the match. He next put USCGA’s John Manganiello on his back at the 2:51 mark, completing York’s shutout of USCGA.  Saliba then finished his day with a pin of Kings’ Point Dan Wilke, 2:35 into the match, completing an outstanding day for the senior.

Saliba improves to 20-3 with the four wins.

The Spartans put their win streak on the line at the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College starting on Friday afternoon in Williamsport, PA.
