YORK, Pa. – Following his outstanding performance at the York College Quad Meet this past Saturday, senior wrestler Alex Martocello has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week. He becomes the third wrestler to garner the honor this season as Joey Giaccio (Nov. 21) and George Saliba (Jan. 9) each received the accolade earlier this year.
Martocello, the #2 wrestler in Division III at 184 pounds, went 3-0 in his trio of matches this weekend helping the Green and White to a 3-0 team performance. York bested Hunter (22-18), #30 TCNJ (30-13), and #21 Elizabethtown (30-15) during the day to improve to 24-3 overall and officially break the team wins record of 21 set back in the 2002-2003 season and equaled last year.
The senior captain registered bonus points in each of his three triumphs, notching two technical falls and one pinfall. Martocello, who now stands at 25-1 on the season, opened his day with an 18-3 win in York’s match against Hunter. He followed that effort with an 18-2 victory against TCNJ, as he bumped up to the 197-pound class in that bout. Martocello finished his flawless afternoon with a pinfall just 1:43 into his match against Elizabethtown.
After his 3-0 showing, Martocello now stands at 25-1 on the season. For his stellar career, he sports an 86-19 mark having lost only six matches in each of his first three seasons.
Martocello and the Spartans return to action on Friday, February 10, as they host Division II Kutztown. Wrestling action from the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center is slated for 7:00 pm.
